Ferdinand State Forest

A very enjoyable ride through the wooded hills and valleys of the area. The trail consists of a 60/40 mix of fire roads and very fun singletrack spread thoughout the ride. Technical ability required is minimal since most of the trail is smooth and fast. The trail does require a moderate aerobic level due to several steep climbs. Allow 2 to 3 hours to complete this worthwhile trail which sees very little traffic. Be cautious of hikers especially near the lake and do not ride after a heavy rain (horses are NOT permitted).

Summary:
I just rode this trail as part of the Dino Series. All I have to say is Ferdinand is a true test for any single speed rider. Don't bring your SS unless you want to die. The down hills are incredible and make up for the excruciating knee busting climbs. Definitely a must ride. Do yourself a favor and try to avoid 90 degree weather. This trail will make you feel like a wimp at times. Check it out.

Bring your granny - and your climbing legs! Great trail. Nothing really techinal about the trail but the climbing and descending more than make up for it! The trail has a good flow to it and is very well marked. The map of the trail is pretty accurate as well. Ferdinand State Forest mtb trail is probably the best kept secret in Indiana.

Summary:
This trail is really outstanding, but some of the climbs were tough for me, there were some fallen trees in the middle of a steep up hill and I had to stop to drag my bike over the tree and couldn't start ridding again because of the steep grade. I had to drag it to the top of the hill. What a work out! I love this place. Start at the trail head and go south and up on the ridge with a great view of the lake, past the campground then back up past some more small lakes and up past the fire tower[what a view] and back down to the trail head. I great ride. Maybe because I'm from West Palm Beach the climbs bothered me more than it would the locals, but a great work out!

Recommended Route:
Go in the entrance to the park past the pay booth about 1/4 mile, trail head on the right, Maps in the tray on the sign.

Summary:
First off I loved it. I am originally from Ferdinand,
so when I visit home once a month it will be well worth
riding everytime. Maybe I am out of shape, but I have
ridden in Denver CO., and then this summer the Tsali
trails in North Carolina, and this trail made me more
tired then both those places. I think if they made
more trails and looped them in one direction and made
the uphills wind up a little more this could be some of
the best trails anywhere. The downhills are great so
if they made loops going in one direction, and then
made the uphills a little more winding they would be
great. Plenty of room for many more miles of trails
as well. i don't know who I need to talk to about
these suggestions but this place could be great. As it
is it is very fun and well worth a drive, mine is 4
hours. In the end maybe I just need to be in better
shape, and you will need to be too.

Summary:
All I need are some tasty waves of gently rolling hills, a cool buzz, and I'm fine. Nice single track. Not a soul out here. Took about 2 1/2 hours. Spectacular view from the fire tower for the adrenaline junkies.

Recommended Route:
About 75 miles west of Louisville on I-64.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Three dolla at Hoosier National Forest for bike trail permit.
