Chipilly Forest Preserve

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

This trail has two distinct personalities. The first loop is a widetrack hiking/biking trail, very beginner, fairly flat - Maybe 1 mile? Ride it until you find a short spur that leads to the intersection of the trail, a river, and the railroad tracks. This is where the better, more advanced single track begins. Cross the river, or the tracks, or both. All three directions lead to lots of short semi-technical trails. Many spots are overgrown, watch for thorns. Some features to find are a fast run alongside the river, a series of jumps, a few log features.

Summary:
Read about this trail here and at http://cambr.org. Today I decided to check it out. Found the main drag nice - not to hard. Found a nice creek to ride across and found a trail that followed the creek - right on the edge. Too much brush and logs for me to risk falling off the 6' or so droppoff so I took it slow. Had to choose between thorns and falling in the creek a couple times. After hitting my head too much on overhead branches I took it even slower. But it was a fairly long stretch along this creek and very challenging for me because it was so narrow and on the edge with the brush, etc. Also crossed Dundee road and found a marked but overgrown trail heading into the woods going NW. Nice 'natural' ride I guess but too overgrown at the ankles to enjoy it and soft at spots. This would be more fun earlier in June before it gets overgrown. Or if more riders would ride it and make more of a path.

Recommended Route:
I’m still exploring this area. The main drag is fun enough to return to. The creek side trail could use some work to clear the overhead branches. Although the trail is worn enough there must be enough riders taking this trail. The forest preserve trail NW of Dundee and Lee roads would be nice to explore more fully in late spring before it gets overgrown. I'm going to return to explore more. Google maps arial view gives me clues as to where

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Kettle South John Muir and Rock Cut are the best I've ridden in the area.

Summary:
Unless you're good at getting over logs without dragging your crank, be prepared to get off your bike fairly often. There are some optional technical features as well. The river run is great but it is precariously close to the water. I am sure a few bikers are lost in the drink each year. Because of all of the trails, the ride is as long and difficult as you choose for it to be.

Recommended Route:
Just ride it all, the forest preserve is pretty small.
