Fun technical singletrack, you must portage up some steep rock faces though. Most drops are rideable.

Trail Directions
Follow highway 149 down a big hill to Spillway road, taking a right on that. once the road turns right, and the spillway is in view, park near the tree, there is a gate and a road leading up to the left. Toss your bike over the gate and pedal up the gravel road, once the road almost levels out, the trail goes off to the left over a little foot bridge. Its right by a telephone pole and some cement highway fances

Summary:
Road this trail today, started at the spillway, and it wasn't in great shape. In many places huge trees are down in the middle of the path and are very hard to get around because the steep hill on either side. Also, it was pretty over grown in a lot of spot with random holes in the middle of the brush making it almost too dangerous to ride.
However, when the trail was rideable it was a lot of fun but it didn't last long.

Summary:
I only got to ride the first 1/2 mile or so of the trail up from the dam, so consider this an incomplete review. My wife and I went swimming at the cool little swimming hole across the dam from the trail at the spillway, and I decided that on the way back down to the car I'd take a few minutes and check out the trail. From what I saw and rode, this is a place I definitely would like to see more of. Gorgeous setting, and the rocks are a fun challenge.

came down to siu and rode this for my first time. it was awesome. very underrated, i agree. i love the trails here in central illinois, but it was a nice change to actually ride on rock. if you follow the route in the description you cant get lost. it was technical, but well laid out and in great condition for this time of year. i definatly recomend this trail to the southerners of this state.

Summary:
An update for the trail-- it's been worked and is still being worked on. Now, when you ride from the dam, you'll find a short spur trail just past the double-track road. Turn right on that trail and head down the hill for a cliff jump and a refreshing swim! Still the best trail in the Carbondale/Murphysboro area!

Recommended Route:
Since this is pretty much a review of the trail as ridden from the dam, I'll leave it at that.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Try riding from either the Buttermilk Trailhead (off of rt. 3) or Johnson Creek, which is a bit further west/north Of course, there's also Cedar Lake...

Summary:
This is a very challenging trail that has a lot of potential. This trail has some good dips and some technical climbs. The view and picnic tables at the end of the trail (for now) are a great reward for this demanding ride. This trail is constantly being improved and there is a lot more trail to be made. Enough cool part about this trail is the spillway near where you park, an awesome place to practice your bike handling skills at.
