Weekend Warrior Summary: Official Trail maps:

Cook County Section North:

Cook County Section South:

This trail is mostly a wide crushed limestone or dirt trail from Wisconsin/Illinois boarder to Madison Ave in Forest Park, IL. With some really nice single track in the last south section.
As for dirt jumps:
Three possible locations I've heard of:
1. River Grove, North of Grand Ave. and just south of the rail road underpass - look east for some small jumps about 60 yards off the main wide trail. There is also a little bmx singletrack trail that wanders through the trees (very lame)
2. Off Oakton Ave - see other posts and youtube
3. Somewhere in Wheeling - as seen on youtube
Recommended Route: Between North Ave and Madison Ave is an amazing singletrack trail. this is not on any off the official trail maps.
North of Washington and just south of the union pacific tracks head east on single track to a cool berm/hill for some fun stuff a few small jumps around the base. Other recommended trails in the same area: Palos Hills

Racer Summary: The DesPlaines River Trail has no technical difficulty - It's only good for long endurance training rides. Lots of hikers and family bikers on weekend can create a hazard.

, from Des Plaines, IL Summary: I'm new to mountain biking (2 months), but I love this trail. I have ridden it numerous times, to and from work. Lots of singletrack offtrails to explore. Here are four of my favorites: 1. From Oakton Avenue, go north about 20 feet, take the first offtrail on your left. It's a switchback trail, with lots of tight turns and logs to negotiate. Try this one as fast as you can. It's a blast! It's long, but take it to the end and you'll end up at Algonquin Road. 2. From Oakton Avenue, go south about 20 feet, take the first offtrail on your left. Nice gully to go through, plus plenty of turns to negotiate. Also a sprinkling of logs and tree roots. When you reach a couple of forks, keep to your left. It will take you back to the main trail. 3. Continue on the main trail, south of Oakton Avenue. You will go under a viaduct (the tollway). When you go under the viaduct, keep going straight, up the hill and follow the path to your right. The beginning has a couple of fast downhills, followed by a narrow path winding through tall brush. Smash through as fast as you can! You will meet up with the main trail at Touhy Avenue. 4. Continue on the main trail past Touhy Avenue. After about 1-2 blocks, take the trail on your right. It's a narrow trail that slopes gently downhill. I blast down this one at about 20mph. It's a nice high speed run. When you get down to the river, the path will continue on your left, taking you back to the main trail. I have hardly begun to explore all the offtrails, there are so many! There are a couple more I know between Oakton and Touhy that have lots of hills for jumping, like a BMX-type course. Happy trails! Brian Recommended Route: Main trail starts at Algonquin Road in Des Plaines, goes south to North Avenue. It follows the Des Plaines River. The main trail is about 6-8 feet wide, hard-packed dirt and easy riding. There is a parking lot where the Des Plaines River passes Algonquin Road.
