Prison Trail

Average Rating:    (3.25 of 5)

From the trail head go up city creek about 400 yards to where the trail forks at a bridge. Do not cross the bridge but stay on south side of the creek which will lead to a good hill climb. Once on top of the hill follow the trail west and south on an old two track for about 400 yards. The trail forks onto a single track next to a stand of junipers. Follow the trail through a small gulley and then up and down a larger gulley right next to the womens prison. Continue another mile and a half or so to cusick creek. From cusick creek take the upper fork back across the bench to a great twisty stretch of downhill that ties back into the city creek trails.

Summary:
One of a big network of trails in the City Creek Management Area, a watershed management area owned by the City of Pocatello with over 50 miles of trails and connections to a much larger network. Prison Trail is one of the more popular and is one of the routes between the City Creek drainage and Cusick Creek. Higher up another trail called Over-the-Top offers challenges suited to expert riders and is a truly memorable ride. The trail network, including Prison Trail, is well worth a visit with several days worth of diverse single track to explore.

Summary:
I really like this trail. If your not in good condition, then don't attempt. It is a pretty good climb either way you go, so don't think you can get out of paying homage to the mountain. No my friends, this mountain requires you to climb before the real fun begins. However, once you climb up to cusick creek, you can have a ball. I wouldn't recommend the upper fork. About 50 yards before you actually get to the fork, up to the right is an alternate trail. First timers, please take this route. It will save you a lot of grief trying to relocate yourself, and you will have more fun in the process.

Recommended Route:
I would recommend that you take you the left fork at the first bridge. It may look like a hellacious climb at first, but believe me, it is the easier way in the long run. The right fork isn't quite as steep right at first, but it doesn't mellow out very often either, whereas after you clear the initial climb to the left it mellows out a whole lot. I ride almost everday, and twice a week, I take the right fork. The rest of the time I stay left.

Summary:
This is a pretty polished trail. It is a great ride that can be connected to many different trails (trail creek or up Cusick creek to Kimport Mountain). The ride across the bench is some of the best singletrack ever for speed and fun. Just watch when you enter the trees at city creek for other trail users. To avoid this ride early and haul ass.

Recommended Route:
Same as above
