Moscow Mountain

Single track, logging roads, sand, basalt, hardpack, gradual to steep climbs and descents. Watch out for moose and many other wild critters.
Summary: Considering the fact that trail riding is only 10 minutes outside of Moscow, I think the trails are excellent. I just spent my first summer here in Moscow and explored a good portion of the mountain. There ARE a variety of trails at all skill levels. Those that 'dis' the mountain don't know what it's like to live in an area without quick trail access.
Recommended Route: Starting at Headwaters Trail off Lewis Rd. is the best. Since you are at the west end of the mountain, you can make a long ride via any combination of trails to the east end of the mountain and back.
Other recommended trails in the same area: If you have the time to drive an hour northwest of Moscow, I'd highly recommend riding in the Whitepine Campground area. There's great singletrack up in them thar hills!

Summary: For those who are crazy like me, ride it after the first light snow and for the last few weeks of march/early april. disk brakes recomended, i ran throiugh a set of pads in one day on my v-brakes:). yup, can ride everywhere, though most isnt really technical. Wish it had a buit more singletrack, oh well.
Recommended Route: Pretty much the whole thing, whatever you want. There is technical stuff, you just gotta be adventurous. Try headwaters trail, thats good stuff.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Well, if you wanna ride through a bunch of wheat fields and farms, go ahead, but this is just about the only mountain in the area. urban biking doesnt count, but there is some of that around at both Wazzu and UofI. could go bum around steptoe butte if you really want to, dont know whats up there yet.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: I'm primarily a road rider/racer, but I use Moscow Mountain for strength and elevation training on a mountain bike. If you're looking for an intense cardiovascular workout that's about 25 miles, then I'd recommend a route that starts at Mountain View Park on the northeast side of Moscow on Mountain View Road. Ride north on Mountain View Road until it T's and take a left down the gravel road. The gravel road will soon T into Foothill Road ... take a right onto Foothill Road and head toward Moscow Mountain. Foothill Road eventually connects with Lewis Road, veer right and stay on Foothill; basically, you're now at the base of the mountain. You may have to cross over a closed gate (hiking & MTB okay). Follow the main road up Moscow Mountain and follow Foothill road up to the ridge. You'll climb continuously for about 4.5 miles for a total of 2,000+ feet. Stay on main trail/road or you'll get lost! Main trail eventually connects to Four Corners (you can't miss it, two major logging trails cross one another). At Four Corners, take a right (may have to go around closed gate). It's basically downhill from Four Corners for about 6 miles and 2,500 feet. The road eventually turns into Moscow Mountain Road. Stay on Moscow Mountain Road for 3.5 to 4.0 miles till you connect back up to Mountain View Road. Take left on Mountain View Road (you'll T into it from Moscow Mountain Road) and head back to Mountain View Park. This is a great route if you're looking for some hill training with constant candence spinning. Allow **at least** 1.5 hours to complete the circuit.
Recommended Route: Depending on where you start and where you wish to finish, there are countless routes. Everything from easy, buffed trails, technical singletrack, to steep grade downhills.

Summary: UMMM....riding for all skill levels? I think not, Ive riding this mountain for four years and have found nothing but the easiest riding in the world. I was thinking about teaching my grandma how to ride up there! Its not worth driving to from Pullman, theres better riding on campus.
Recommended Route: Go to four corners on the moutain or any start that is listed in the riding book that someone made. Dont get lost!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Campus at WSU, UofI campus, Spokane rules!

Summary: Watchout for moose, motorcycles, cars, hikers, other mountainbikers, and trees!
Recommended Route: UP, whichever way you want. From four corners head east (right) and go until you find the big boulder which will be on your right off the logging road. Keep going up to the top were you can turn around then back down the logging road at mach speed (watch out for other riders and cars) and then go around the boulder and down. You will want to take the second right on your way down otherwise the first one will drop you into a hole. If you ride dirtbikes, you will have more fun than a mountain bike.
