Hope to Clark Fork(the high route)

Head East from parking, turn left at first street climbing up the hill. Stay straight at all intersections. Pass the cemetery on the right. Ride between a house and barn, the road becomes gravel, leaves houses behind and enters the woods all within 1 mile of leaving your car. This road becomes a trail made bigger by quads. The trail climbs, switch backing over loose rock in deep tree cover with occasional views down to the lake. Pass a mine adit at 5.8 miles at 4520 feet elevation. At 8.2 miles 5440’ almost 3500’ elevation gain, the trail enters a pass where trail 120 crosses. Turn right on trail which undulates along the South side of the ridge offering excellent alpine views when you dare take your eyes off the talus strewn slope. Go straight at junction with trail to Porcupine Lake at 13.7 miles and 5530’. At 16.0 and 5290’ pass trail junction to Beetop Mountain. From here the trail drops switch backing on sketchy trail tread and switchbacks down to a dirt lane at 20.6 and 2300’. Turn right and go around gate and ride to second intersection, turn left and pedal out to route 200 just West of Clark Fork at 24.8 miles and 2100’. It is 9 miles of pavement riding back to Hope. Or, you could put a shuttle car here.
Summation:
A hard 8.2 mile 3500’ climb, 7.8 miles of single track on lots of talus, 3.4 miles of sketchy single track downhill. 24.8 miles, 4330’ climbing, ride time 6 hours.
Drive to Hope,ID on the North shore of Lake Pend Oreille on state route 200. Follow 200 business to the main street in Hope. Park in front of a pizza place in the small street side parking area.
Summary: Great alpine experience, very lonely. Single track along ridge crosses many nicely sculpted talus slopes which is all rideable by keeping your speed up and steering a good line. Lots of huckleberries. The single track down is not in good shape making it a skillfull descent. Take lots of H2O and some food.
Recommended Route: As described
