Bonneville to Bulltrout
2 reviews

Steep in spots, breathtaking views, and hotsprings for when you're done. Used by horses, MX bikes, hikers but not very crowded. You can choose to go to a fire lookout on a peak or head north to Bulltrout lake (beware of moose) After your ride, hitch back to Bonneville for a warm soak.

Summary:
The Warm Springs trail from Bonneville to Bull Trout is currently in great condition. Rode it on 9/7 and with a little rain coming down today it will only get better. Although it is called the Warm Springs Plunge it is not all downhill......lots of short strenuous climbs and some hike-a-bike in the last two miles. Lots or real single track with some exposure. Trail length is about 13 miles. Our trail crew has buffed the trail out the last few years but there are still some loose rocks.....so kick some off on your next ride. There is also one blown out section (50 feet) in the Deadman Canyon section....soon to be repaired.

Recommended Route:
For an easy ride start at Bull Trout and head down to the Warm Springs Airport. For the Big Ride start at the turn off for Bonneville Hot Springs/Campground, ride up Highway 21, left on Forest Road 520 to Bull Trout and down Warm Springs trail to your car.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Deadwood Ridge from Deadwood Campground. Nice singletrack but expect to do some hike-a-bike right from the trailhead.

Summary:
The Warm Springs Plunge (as is named by the rangers) has an incredible drop the first couple miles. Sand, switchbacks, and a steep right-side cliff make for an interesting descent. The trail flattens out (mostly) for another 10 or so miles following warm springs creek then you climb your way out. While nowhere near the steeps encountered on the way down, there are steeps still to climb, creeks to cross, and most likely logs to hop. Nevertheless nothing too technical for anyone but the most novice. The only problem here is having the endurance to climb up and over the last 5 miles of singletrack... parts of which require carrying your ride. In the last stretch you'll see Bonneville on the left and can drop down for a relaxing soak. I believe the trail is 19.7 miles. If you're in for a relaxing pace, you can stop along the flats on the way down for a mid-ride soak. There are hot springs along the way down, but nothing like Bonneville. I have never seen another rider on this trail (outside our own party).

Recommended Route:
Park at the Bonneville air strip then hitch a ride north to Bull Trout Lake (18+ miles). At the lake head southwest to the warm springs trail.
