Big Hole challenge

Ride west into Horseshoe canyon. The road will dogleg, first right, then left, then bear left up the canyon road. You will pass a few homes to the left, ride over two cattle guards, after that take the first dirt jeep road to the left. (it will be a little farther than you think. The trail to the right accesses some more difficult climbing and singletrack, this is called the expert loop.) The left hand trail from the road climbs up this doubletrack/wide single track, bear to the right at all turns. It will meander for a few miles, cross a creek, climb again, and at a trail crossing (the right trail brings you up Long Ridge, desscribed in the Mahogony Trail review), go left, and rip your way back down to the valley. At the first perpidicular intersection, 100 S., turn left and back to the car! Heinekin, perhaps?

Ridden Trail:

Summary:
This was a fun ride but not what I would call real single track but then I'm a novice and what do I know? You could take a four wheeler or small jeep down most if not all of it. The climbs challenged my wife and I but we made it. My bike computer showed 12.2 miles when we got back to the pick-up. Actual riding time waws 1:40. We probably stretched the ride to close to two hours what with stops to catch our breath on the climbs, enjoy the scenery, and a rest stop to eat an apple. We were glad we did it, would do it again, and would recommend it. Just remember there is more fire road to it than single track. I'm only giving it a three due to the lack of what I would call true single track and the fact that the paved road at the start and end make up probably half the distance. As long as you know this going in (which I didn't) you shouldn't be disappointed.

Recommended Route:
The route described above is correct but needs some updating. The road was paved over a year ago so you'll never hit gravel. If you want to ride clockwise I'd advise parking by the silo (for those of you from Jersey they're the round metal sheds we put grain in) and heading South. If you want to ride counter clockwise (probably easier to navigate), drive a little further to where the main road turns right (the first dog leg). There's a good place to park and unload here. Follow the above directions (on paved road) for almost four miles to the turn off.

Haven't tried any but look forward to it.

Summary:
Excellent fitness singletrack, not too punishing but very rewarding. There are also loop options that you can access from this trail to satisfy any kind of ride...go to the shop in town (big Hole), they can give you directions (or maybe even go ride with you)...

Recommended Route:
as specified, clockwise or counter are both fun...

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Horshoe to mahagony, etc
