Bead Lake

Several excellent trails around the lake. The loop is very popular, it circles the entire lake. Steep dropoffs on the lake side and steep hillsides on the uphill side.

Trail Directions
Driving North on Hwy 2 out of Old Town, turn left onto the road going along the Pend Orielle River. Around 10 miles or so along that road, there will be a dirt road on the right going steeply up and curving to the left. Follow it for a couple of miles. The trailhead and dirt parking area are shortly thereafter. (Sorry for the somewhat vague directions (I need to get the road names and exact distances), I don't have a good map at hand now!)

Summary:
Excellent cross country trail (freeriders won't like due to lack of tech challenges), lots of little ups and downs; there's a good granny gear climb for two miles up to Forest Service Road 1532, but the return trip downhill is well worth it! The trail spends a good deal of its time in old growth rain forest, the rest working around the east side of Beade Lake; this trail does not loop the lake. A real treat for this area, double-digit singletrack that the motos can't touch, hence, it's buffed (good trail for you fully rigids riders) and no "I can throttle my fat arse up this hill" ruts of death. I've ridden all over the state, the south has it in spades for variety of terrain an access, but this trail here is a real gem, one of the best I've run across. Lets get responsible riders up here and get mountain bikers established as regular trail users; hate to see other user groups take another trail away from us just because we don't use it. And remember, ride responsibly, slow down when you pass hikers, say hello, be nice, and maybe they'll let us keep using great trails like Bead Lake

Recommended Route:
Park at the trailhead off of Bead Lake road and do the ride out and back. The above directions may be out of date; just follow the river road and look for the Bead Lake singns, you'll see 'em

Summary:
Absolutely one of the best trails in the country. It has forest, lakes, and ultra smooth single track. Intense downhill with just enough corners to make it interesting. Intermediate skills a neccesity, but my wife did the trail her first time. Although, she was nervous on the cliff trail next to the lake.

Recommended Route:
Road first, descend into 11 miles of singletrack
