There are two loops in the form of a figure 8. The inner loop closest to the trail is semi-technical and fast, going uphill for the first half then downhill the other way. This particular loop (the inner track)is .66km and riding in either direction is desirable and offers possibility for extended riding if you get tired of one direction. The other part of the loop, the extended section as we call it, is extremely technical, dropping into a root infested, rock infested trail meant to test even the most proficient riders. Dr. Tanabe built the trail in this manner on purpose as a testing trail for his Mountain Bike class he teaches at the University. The additional trail adds only a few hundred meters before arriving back near the entrance point of this section, so loops of both parts of the figure 8 are easily possible. The overall trail length including both sections is exactly 1km of pure technical exhilarating riding bliss. Very Recommended for all who are interested in riding.
I myself have attended the University for 3 years and am quite sure that I have ridden over 1000 laps on this trail and still enjoy testing my skills on the more advanced section.
The Hilo side of the Island gets plenty of rain making the roots slippery and the mud muddier so watch out!
Summary: Many riders may scoff when they hear that the UH trail is so short, (1-2km long), but what kept me riding this trail daily for years is the fact that there are just so many different lines to choose. The trail is littered roots, rocks, off camber sections, steep climbs and sharp decents. You could ride this trail a hundred times and then discover a new line which would make it all seem new again.
Sometimes we get spoiled when we live somewhere that has a ton of trails, it makes it hard to really develop a close intimacy with a one specific trail. At UHH you become focused because you have this one ride, but with time you really learn to shred.

Recommended Route: Clockwise, Counterclockwise, both are fun and have their advantages. Be sure to check out the new section cut through the middle by Nate, one of the best riders and visionaries out there! (P.S: He'll be the guy that passes you)

Recommended Route: Clockwise is much faster than counter, but both are very fun. The entire trail is about 1km and my best time is just over 4 minutes. I have a friend that made a few sub 4 minute laps on this trail but anything under 6 minutes is still considered quite an achievement. Use the inner loop if you are a beginner, (you will still get quite a workout and learn some technical skills) but if you consider yourself a moderate to advanced rider, go all the way and attempt to do the extended area without any dabs. That alone has kept me going for 3 years and over 1000 laps on this trail.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Kulani Trail system. Talk to Chris at the Hilo Bike Hub for more information on Friday 4:00 rides.
