The unpaved access road is only the beginning of the ride. eventually the trail turns to singletrack hugging the coast,and snaking along the hillside above it. There's some technical sections in here: rock gardens,logs to hop over,tight twisty corners,etc to make it fun,but there's no major climbs to make you miserable. It's all play and no pay here. And the views of the coast are unbeatable in my opinion. There's a wild,unkept look to this whole area that makes you feel like you're a million miles away from civilization.
Take 56 North from Lihue to about a mile and a half past Kapaa. Turn right into the beach access area and park. Trail begins on unpaved access road north of the parking area.
Summary: Just re-road this trail on a visit in January for the first time in a few years. Very cleaned up now, mostly a paved seawalk kind of mixed use trail until you get north of Donkey Beach. Still a bit sketchy in the Anahola area. Its now more "comfortable", or more populated than before. But still, a coastal ride in Hawaii is a very good thing.
Recommended Route: Kapaa to Mo'oloa (ish)

Summary: The upside: good, windy, technical single track along the pacific ocean... lots of shade (nice for Hawaii)... terrain that you can smoke through -- or just cruise -- if that's your thing. The downside: lots and lots of garbage. Rusted out junk cars. Rotting trash. Misc. discarded home appliances. Occasionally parts of the trail are very overgrown with grass. Not sure about the "wild", "unkept" feeling the author got... definitely not a "million miles" away from civilization judging by the trash... Not worth shipping a bike to Kauai for, but Kauai's not really a good mountain bike vacation destination anyway. There are some surprisingly good rental bikes available though... if you really need to catch some trail time, they can hook you up.
Recommended Route: Park at Donkey Beach lot on main highway, Kealia Beach, or Anahola Beach Park. Route varies by mood and energy level, enough short single track sections to mix it up and keep it fresh. Advanced riders can head to the mauka side of the highway for a few miles of more technical, less garbagy trail.

Summary: Absolutely breath taking!!!!!
In Kapaa, stop at Kauai Cycle and have them point you in the right direction...across the street! The trail follows the coast line, heading north from Kapaa. It extends about 6 miles with tons of sweeping, red sand in green field, single track. Colors you've never seen before on a bike, I promise.
Recommended Route: Start from Kapaa, head north along the coast on a gravel/paved path. About a mile up, the trail turns to double track, and after another mile, incredible single track. Impossible to get lost...and a very good amount of variety.
