Molokai Ranch

This is a well maintained large network of trails that are in a very remote area of private land. The trails are mostly downhill with a shuttle at the bottom. We never used the shuttles and made the 5+ mile climb back up to the lodge at the top.

I flew from Honolulu to Molokai (MKK) and rented a truck. You can get shuttle to the ranch as well. We stayed at the sheraton on the ranch. The trails were right out our door!

Summary:
Ridden once and never again unless Molokai Ranch steps up to the plate and decides to do some maintenance. All of the trails I rode had extended sections where the grass was so tall that you could not even see the trail. That led to a significant amount of time walking through grass that was up to my neck in height and I am 6' tall. My wife (who is 5'2" ) had an even harder time.

If I was them I would be embarassed to advertise my mountain bike trails. They should call it a jungle expedition and hand out machettes to each rider.

Summary:
Disappointing! 100+ miles of unmaintained trails! $25 dollar meals! Reserved rooms in the lodge, but somehow got stuck in tents.

Went on the guided cliffs tour. Ok, but not for $85 a person. They showed up an hour late and damaged several bikes because they over-torqued or didn't tighten the bike mounts. Circled around in some wooded single-track, then cruising along the cliffs. Guides are cool, but don't know anything about bikes. Had to fix one of the their bikes for them because they didn't know how to use a chain tool.

Reserved shuttle to take us back to the airport, but they said we never had an appointment. Luckily they were able to come by anyway.

Secluded and isolated, not a single person biking except for our group.

Very disappointing...Didn't leave with a very good feeling.

Summary:
This was a big let down! The trails are not maintained at all. It is a shame because there are miles of trails and no riders. We spoke to one of the maintenance people who candidly admitted that they no longer maintained the trails because it was too labor intensive. I packed a suitcase of riding gear for a two week vacation and only rode this once. I would recommend that you just past this up until the ranch makes a true commitment to their claim that this is a mountain bike destination.

Summary:
Supposedly >100 miles of trails. In actuality, only about 40 miles rideable, due to non-maintenance (even though we had to pay $20 trail maintenance fee if you bring your own bike).

Recommended Route:
Only one...fly into Hoolehua, take $28 shuttle (minimum 4 ppl) to Ranch

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Keoki -> Coral -> Shoofly -> Rock Garden:

Summary:
This place is really neat. It is very remote. We saw no other bikers while riding. The trails are 90% singletrack and 75% downhill. The conditions range from super hardpacked to sandy washouts. This place has the most fun rollercoasters I have ridden. They have huge thorns everywhere so you MUST use slime tubes, and even then you will get flats. The flight here is very long and traveling with bike cases sucks. But it was well worth it. It is very expensive and the food choices are limited. The riding is like nowhere else in the world. We had a really fun time, Make plans to ride in Maui as well we didn't but we will next time. Check out the web site. They do rent bikes and they have a nice shop with super cool guys who let me use their shop to build and pack up our bikes. Thanks Josh

Recommended Route:
Fly into Molokai and stay at the Mokokai Ranch. You can either stay at the plush Lodge or the tenttaloes on the beach. Once there you have better packed well because if you need some crazy or even ordinary part you won't find it here. If you come this far you will want to ride all the trails here, so with that in mind I would reccomend climing back up as well as decending these trails.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I can't recomend any other trails here but I know the shop guys will lead you in the right direction. 4 stars for the travel involved and the lack of cheaper food options. But what do you expect in Hawaii.
