Mililani Trail

Mililani is a network of trails. There is fast single track through california grass, rooty singletrack through guava forests, fire roads, whoop-de-doos, nice downhill stretches ("Widow Maker")and grueling climbs. From the top trails there are great views of central Oahu from the Waianae Mountains to Diamond Head. All the trails link together and are also used by motorcyclists, so watch out. During wet weather the trails become muddy and dangerous.
Starting at Honolulu International Airport, head west on H-1 to the H-2 interchange. Take H-2 north and exit at the first off-ramp. At the Waipio Uka off-ramp, turn left going over the bridge that crosses the freeway and turn left again at the first side street. This is where you park. To get to the trail-head, ride back over the bridge that crosses the highway and head down the road towards the Mililani Cemetery. There are multiple trailheads to the Mililani Trail network along this road. The first is at the metal gate on your left about a quarter mile down the road. This leads into the lower trail network. The second trailhead is on your right about a half mile in right after you pass the road that leads to the Waiawa prison. There is evidence of paintball wars on the trees at this trailhead. A third trailhead is about a mile up the road that leads to the prison on your right. It is the begining of "Mango Trail". It is located by two large mango trees and can be difficult to find. The next trailhead is located at the metal gate on the left side of the road that heads towards the prison. It is on the other side of the road and just passed the trailhead for Mango Trail. There are other Trailheads as well, since Mililani is a collection of trails. Right across the road from the paintball trailhead is another trailhead.
Summary: Today was was the first time riding in this area. I rode across the freeway and about 1/8 mi. down the road on the left, squeezed through a broken fence & took a semi-paved (gravel) trail uphill. Nearing the top, the gravel trail turned into a nice dirt single-track running parallel with the H-2 freeway. I just followed the orange ribbon marked trail & ended up right next to the Memorial park. I continued on and ended up about 1/8 mi. away from my starting point. I don't think this trail is part of the "Mililani Trails" that is being reviewed, but I had fun there, and would ride again.
Recommended Route: Follow the orange ribbons :) .

Summary: Many-many different options. You could do a 1 hour loop, or do a bunch of different loops together for an all day epic ride. Bring water and food, and don't go after a rain. If you have an old-school elevated chainstay bike with forks that have tons of clearence (bontrangers) then you might consider Mililani after (and during) the rains. It is an illegal trail so ride at your own risk. If you get hurt, don't blame the landowners or they'll start kicking people out more often.
Recommended Route: This is one of the best places to go on a group ride.
Other recommended trails in the same area: This is all info as I remember it from '96

Summary: Awesome network, not too technical for a beginner or novice, but still challenging, fun, and a great workout; an endless playground. Easy to get lost but you figure it out after about 10 rides. Uphills are manageable w/ a few steep "throw your bike up on your shoulder sections". Nice downhill that you can blaze down or play it conservative. Unlike trails like Aiea Loop there are few portions where if yu wipe out you may fall hundreds of feet. The Whoop-dee section is an awesome reward for getting to the top. Not too many roots, but a lot of crevices in the middle of some trails to make the high speed descents interesting but manageable. These are the best trails on island EXCEPT in the Winter. The "red clay-like mud" turns your bike into a sled rather a two wheeled vehicle so be prepared to walk. Mango Loop on the south side is becoming overgrown w/ elephant grass although not seeing where you're going can be fun. Recommend long sleeve jersey and glasses are a must. Be prepare to get a few scratches on your face. MTBikers outnumber hunters so its pretty safe even if you're solo.
Recommended Route: Access thru paintball area go to 2nd "jeep road" and make a left to do Mango Loop CW or take a right past the gate take a left on the road and go a bit and access Mango Loop CCW (I prefer CCW) on the right at the two Mongo Mango trees.
Other recommended trails in the same area: No one has mentioned these trails in anything I've seen about MTBing on Oahu: Schofield Barracks East Range (across from Wheeler Airfield gate). Don't worry no shooting here just an open access training area. No technical portions just military jeep road w/ a lot of long shallow HOT climbs to get you in shape. Logged 30 miles one ride without repeating a trail. Runs between Wahiawa and Mililani Mauka and gets you into the Koolous.

Summary: this is the mountainbiker playground. millilani is one place you can definitely get lost, so go with some friends. enjoy exploration of new terrain, but realize that a lot of trails lead to dead end drop offs. at the top some technical drops and on the ride back down there's a lot of fat cracks in the mud so enjoy. always bring spares, too long of a ride to not fully enjoy
Recommended Route: start at the pearl city industrial area to extend the trail ride and the finish. be prepared for a long ride/hike up. stay on the main, wide dirt track on the way back. go past the gate on the end of the high grass section to get back on the street.
Other recommended trails in the same area: aiea loop, manana and if in the north shore haula, pupukea, and waimea.
