Cross Country Rider Summary: Mana is the old historic cattle road that still provides access to ranches at the higher elevations of Mauna Kea. It's well maintained fire road all the way. This is a working ranch road so expect light traffic. It is absolutely awesome, a bit of old Hawaii. Great views of the Mountain and, if the clouds part below you, the Pacific Ocean. Koa trees throughout. It's a pretty strenuous uphill if you start from Waimea, but a great cruise if you start from the Mauna Kea Access Rd on the Saddle Road side. Getting to the MKAR is pretty grueling though. I started early morning in Hilo with panniers front and rear carrying about 60#. After a full day of uphill grinding I made it to the start of Mana just before dark. Well worth it though for Mana was the best part of my ‘round the island ride. Have fun. Recommended Route: I forget, but I think it's about a 50 mile trip. I did it in two days starting from the Saddle road side and camping at the State cabins about half way through. Warning, camping is not permitted at all on the road, so if you’re going to do it, hide. The terrain changes from the higher to lower elevations. There are a lot of cinder and baseball size rocks higher up and consequently some hike-a-bike sections where you just can't get any traction. About 12 miles in on the first day the road turns to that volcanic red-red dirt with the greenest of green grass growing on and around it. One section was like a magic carpet--completely covered in smooth grass. A real treat after the previous cinder and rubble sections. The red dirt continues all the way down to Waimea. There are some incredibly fast downhill sections where you can really fly. I did the second half of Mana in about a half a day it was so fast. Watch out for the stutter bumps though.

, from Provo Utah Summary: Mana road by far was one of my favorite rides ever. The riding itself is fun if you like long distance dirt road riding. The scenery included small ancient grassy volcanoes as sentinels at the beginning and a more majestic Mauna Kea to the left. Wild flowers abound. When I rode it I started above the cloud cover, and gradually joined the clouds. The scenery changes into rolling grassy hills. I recommend the ride to those who have good endurance and love long rides. Recommended Route: porcupine rim-moab, ridge trail-alpine, right fork to wadsworth-hobble creak. Other recommended trails in the same area: Beach road Hilo side. Start in Pahoa heading to Kalapana. Continue on road from Kalapana to Pohoiki and to Kapoho. Ride the beach road to Kaloli rd and back to Pahoa.
