Aiea Loop Trail
17 reviews
3.94 of 5
One of the most popular trails on Oahu. It is a loop trail which runs along the ridges overlooking central Oahu with beautiful views of Pearl Harbor and Halawa Valley. There are a few pieces of an old plane wreck about two and a half miles in. Many parts of the trail are boardered by cliffs, so care is essentail. During wet periods, the trail is dangerous and prone to erosion, so do not ride when wet.
From Honolulu International Airport, head ewa (west) on H1 and exit at the Aiea off ramp (exit 13A). At the second stoplight, turn right on Aiea Heights Drive (next to Aiea Shopping Center. Follow Aiea Heights Drive all the way to the top (~3miles) until you reach Kea'iwa Heiau State Park. The trailhead is next to the restrooms at the top of the loop drive.
Summary: This trail is all roots-if you are thinking about riding it just hike it first to see what you are up against. The begining of the trail has huge drops and must be walked down because at the bottom of the dropoff is about 50-75 feet of huge roots that cannot be navigated.
Recommended Route: I recommend a different trail.

Summary: A little wet today and a little slick...wait, really slick, wait until it's pretty dry or you will spend your ride slipping over roots(trail has a ton of them). Forget going uphill when it is wet and hike it, dry and those that love technical ascents will love this. If you have any skills then going downhill should be no problem wet or dry, just take it slow when wet to ensure that you dont plunge down the side of a cliff. This entire trail runs on the side of a mountain with the edge of the track being a drop of anywhere between 100 and 200 feet depending on where you are. I personally wont ride it again unless it's dry, but either way I had a lot of fun. Decending the trail was a blast, I was going really cautious like, but the downhill part is almost half the trail. You spend the first half of the ride going uphill and the second half going downhill followed by a half mile hike up to the end of the loop.(too wet to ride)
Have fun, definately give it a try.

Summary: Uh, look this trail wasn't what I expected. Of course I should have paid closer attention to the prior reviews, but I didn't. Less than a mile in it's all roots, okay if you have full suspension or a decent fork, but not for middle and lower end bikes. If I were you, just don't do it right now, unless you are really pumped.
It reminded me of something out of those hard core biker videos from BC, I might be a wimp but I turned around after a mile. You will not clean the downhill of this trail, if you do, you should be a pro.
Recommended Route: Another trail

Summary: Yes---very very rooty with steep dropoffs on the side---yet if you've been riding much at all you will not find it extreme. But there is a lot of hike a bike due to felled trees, if it's been raining, and the one big rutted area not far from the start. There are way more fun places to ride on Oahu--therefore only 3 fat tires overall.
Recommended Route: It's a loop. But be sure where it branches to stay on the loop or you'll end up in a military land nav restricted area.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Pupukea

Summary: Unless you're very experienced and not afraid of heights, don't bother biking this trail, hike it instead. The trail can get very muddy, narrow, and rooted sections are as slippery as ice. This is the most popular hiking trail on the island, so it can get extremely crowded on weekends, but weekdays are usually not too bad. There's a lot of side trails but don't go down them unless you know where they go, you could get lost. Don't go if it's just rained, you'll damage the trail on a bike.
