Waterworks Trail

The only great intown Ride I know of!!! The loop is about 1.2 miles with several possible deviations. The trail starts with a short climb and a great swirvy descent. Turn left at a small jeep trail and follow it long the railroad tracks until it turns away from the tracks. At this point I like to climb up the the grassy double track road you'll see the return trail on your left at the beginning of the climb but pass up to get a better workout. When the hill crests turn around and take the return trail back to the beginning. There are several good jumbs and technical climbs throughout the different trails. You can explore the other trails well once you get a feel for the loop. Enjoy! Please Note: the Park is testing support for paving this trail. None of the current jogggers, walkers, or mountain bikers want this to happen. Please email me at peter_buch@yahoo.com if you want to get on the petition against paving the trail.

Trail Directions
From the intersection of N. Druid Hills Rd/Clairmont Rd go south on Clairmont Rd. and take a left at the first traffic light(MCCONNELL DR., you'll see brown Mason Mill Park signs). Park at Tennis courts at the back of the park, next to the woods, and closest to the Road. Ride to bottom of hill (50 feet from parking lot) and look to your left for a small trail. Take it (another 100ft) accross the railroad tracks. Once across the railroad tracks keep straight and veere left. Cross a small stone foot bridge and go up your first little steep incline turn left and you are at the start of the loop.

Summary:
Short, moderately technical intown ride. I wouldn't use it for serious training, but it's not bad for a quick ride to keep the reflexes sharp. A good bit isn't really rideable because it's overgrown from the sides and above, but one afternoon with a machete could fix that. All in all, it's good for what it is - a short intown ride that saves you half an hour of driving to Yellow River

Recommended Route:
Just explore. If you get lost, just give up at life.

Summary:
The way to do that would be, going south on Clairmont Rd from N. Druid Hills Rd take a left at the first traffic light(MCCONNELL DR., you'll see brown Mason Mill Park signs) Park at Tennis courts at the far end of parking lot. Ride to bottom of hill (50 feet) and look to your left for a small trail. Take it (another 100ft) accross the railroad tracks. Once across the railroad tracks keep left and cross a small stone foot bridge. The main attraction is a loop that begins by going up the first short steep and taking a left. There are several trails which will ultimately lead to a forest service road. You can take the a left on the forest service road and take you first right after about a half mile to get into the uphill single track which will loop around dump you out where you found the service road. Try going left from that point for two or three different uphill approaches they all go the same place. Explore this thing it is easily 3 miles of trails. All level riders can have a great time. Ride down the hill and on the left 6 feet after the paved road ends is a very narrow opening through the brush. There are old ladies walking this thing so if you think it's scary? It's mostly kids getting high after highschool in the parking lot. I can't say I've scene any rituals.

Best five minute drive you'll take for the Highlands

It's not bigger

Summary:
This is my first trail since I was a kid, I'm 37, both times I've ridden it was wet and muddy. I fall often and get used to my clipless pedals more and more. Everything is scrunched up, so turns come up very quickly. People walking their dogs (unleashed) usually give you a look that says, "don't run over me with your bike and my dog won't bite you" Even thou these woods are small, it is very easy to get lost so pay attention as you go or listen for the construction or watch people jogging for indicators. My second time riding this trail I fell several times and chickened out and walked several times because I didn't see a solution to proceed, so I would walk my bike. There is lots of poison ivy and mosquitos, so longclothing and off. After a couple hours on my timberline/rockshox jett, I was pretty roughed up, and wondered " why did I do that!?" ;)

Recommended Route:
It's kinda hard to find but once you see the 400,000.00 homes, you'll know your near.

I am slowly learning secret hidy-holes in atlanta, but, as a country boy, why should I give away all my secret fishin' spots, you kids 'll just wreck it!!

Summary:
Its fun, more technical than yellow river, but very short. if you live close, or commute on clairmont rd, it is right off clairmont. for what it is, a short middle of atlanta set of trails, its the best.

Try thrm all, there aren't too many

Summary:
I like to include this as part of intown ride, but I would not just go do this. I usually head up from L5P, hit the jumps, steps, and assorted wackiness in Piedmont park then make my way up through Schmuckhead down N. Druid Hills to do this. I finish up riding around Emory down Lullwater and back to my 'hood. This good on otherwise wet days as it drys out pretty fast because of the clay and sand composition.

Recommended Route:
Drop in off the road past the tennis courts, cross the tracks and head on in. Over the bridge take a right and putz around on the ridgeline. Do the drops you'll pass on the way in and then go back around and back up to the main trunk to the left. I usually take the hard right by the cement block and do the peak jump, trench, and the tree ride a few times then head down to the fire road to the left and take it around by the tracks. Go on up to the right where it looks like you'll end up in somebody's house and drop in to the singletrack to the right. Head on through back to the fire road, do it all again or go drink a beer.

Yella River, Man's Hell, Various North GA mountain freakouts my favs being Mountain Town Creek, Hickory Nut, and Bear Creek. Dauset is fun down south.
