Several downhills rough and rocky. Able to gain alot of speed. Some parts are very rocky but fun to ride fast. There is a lake in the middle of the trail great to sit and relax. Many great trails that break off of main trail. They are single track with logs to jump and climb over. Depending on the trail you pick one is extremely rocky and rough but insanely fun. The only thing is that there are many joggers and moutain bikers that also ride the trail so watch out.

Summary:
What a surprise this trail was for a holiday road-trip workout. Just north of Atlanta's 285 bypass and just east of 75 it's hard not to check this trail out on foot or by bike. Google 'Chattahoochee River Run/Bike Path' for directions since the trail doesn't seem to have a street address.

While other trails were closed because of recent rains, this trail was open and provided a great cardio with decent climbs and fun descents for a non-technical double-track that offers a history lesson or two. Locals say the Union Army first crossed the Chattahoochee River nearby on their way to taking Atlanta.

Recommended Route:
Route is various out-and-backs mostly with walkers and runners throughout yielding to courteous bikers.

Summary:
Fun for a quick after work ride, but not near what it used to be. Only 1 technical climb left, we'll see how long before they close that too. One double track trail is all that is open to bikers now despite the fact that SORBA helped cut all the new trails.

The one trail does have decent climbs and descents to get some weekday cardio in. The Cochran Shoals side is smooth flowing loose over hard pack with a couple rock outcropping for some very minor technical challenges. There is one short tough climb covered in rocks and logs on the Sope Creek side that does still give me a satisfied feeling when I make it without dabbing. The gravel covered hill coming from the pond on the Sope Creek side isn't too satisfying going up or down.

Worth a stop if you just want to get a quick ride in.

Recommended Route:
There is only one not posted as off limits now, just follow the signs.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Rope Mill, Blankets Creek

Summary:
This is a great trail system but it has its issues. It's multi-use, multi-directional. There are some fantastic downhill sections but you've got to to be extremely aware of hikers, families, dogs, etc.. that might be right around that blind corner you're screaming into. There are alot of trail snobs who seemingly don't like mtbrs and will pretty much refuse to yield any part of the trail to you. A large portion of the great techy sections that others have noted in their trail reviews are no longer there, as new sections of trail have been built around those sections and they've closed the techy stuff. The new stuff though is flowy and great to ride downhill and nice and sustained climbing when coming back up. Go give it a ride. Just be careful of the dogs, hikers, etc.. that are lurking.

Summary:
Please be advised that the only legal trail for mtn biking at this time (Sept 09) is the 2.5 mile doubletrack that goes from the 5k gravel loop to the Paper Mill Rd car park. None of the singletrack is open to bikes -- never has been. By abiding by the rules, you'll help us, SORBA Atlanta, as we work with the National Park Service to open up to 12 miles of the trail system to biking.
