Oconee Forest Ocmulgee Trail

Average Rating:    (3.61 of 5)

Nice riding. Trail is pretty wide due to the years of horseback riding. There are several well made bridges on this trail over sizable creek crossings. You can take a climb toward Hwy 83, and loop back around, or head toward Wise Creek. The Wise Creek route has several tough climbs due to the railroad ties being utilized. Well worth the ride out of Macon. Be careful during deer hunting season.

Trail Directions
Take U.S. Hwy 23 (State Hwy 87) out of Macon which is commonly known as Riverside Drive. Follow this route until State Hwy 83, take a right toward Monticello. Follow this route over the Ocmulgee River, and turn left on Forest Service Road 1099. Follow this dirt/gravel road for approximately one mile, and park in a designated horse trailer area on the left commonly known as Ocmulgee Flats Hunt Camp. Trail is designated for horses and bikes, and heads toward the river at which point you can turn left toward Hwy 83 or right toward Wise Creek trail. Enjoy the beauty. This trail has been here for a long time, and it is very nice to hike or bike. Thanks to P.O.W.E.R., the trail is being maintained nicely, and I look forward to more additions to the trail, and an easier connection to the Wise Creek Trail. For more information on this trail and several others in the area, call the Ranger Station at (706) 485-7110. Another source is the Middle Georgia Outdoors website.

Summary:
Our first time to this trail to ride horses. I thought it was great, fallen trees, poop and all. Just what we were looking for to get young horses exposed to creeks crossing, bridges, fallen trees and bugs! Easy terrain, we rode for 4 hours over all the property we could find trail to. We are planning a return trip next week. We rode on a tuesday and there was only 2 other horses, no walkers or bikers. The poison ivy was the worst I have ever seen. Be careful of it. It was difficult to tie to the cables due to poison ivy everywhere. We will ride toward the Juliette Cafe next time.

Recommended Route:
from Dublin, I-16 to I-75 to hwy. 23. Continue as the others have recommended. We are horse women so we thought it was great, poop and all!!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Watson Mill State Park near Lexington, GA, a pleasant surprise

Summary:
Overall Fun run - ticks were terrible down on the river portion ( 4/15/01) Stay away from brush!! - North portion of trail ( back across gravel road ) lots of fun ( less ticks ) . Some of the hills are difficult to ride all the way up - switch back or 2 would help. Beautiful hardwood timber and large pine. Don't start too late in the day unless prepared to ride in the dark!

Recommended Route:
From parking lot down to river pretty muddy this week - took trail to left at river out to 83 and back. Then cont up main dirt road to first road on right ( 2 mi? 0 and following back around to parking.

Summary:
Great trail, potentially. coming from north georgia (originally) i must say there is far more effort going in to the trail maintenance here than needs to be at times and not enough at others. if fallen trees dont make you walk, cross ties (for erosion control) will.
These trails are tooooo sandy but still fun. decent up hill, if you dont get stuck in sand. excellent, twisting downhill on the left (at the river) side.
there is A LOT of big trees down wich break the ride up horribly and more horse goodies than you can pick out of your tires!
all things considered...excellent trails for middle georgia!
five tires if not for fallen trees!

Recommended Route:
either way--their is plenty of shit!

Summary:
Trail runs through some very beautiful bottomlands under large canopies of trees. Trail has indeed been here for a long time, but the trail needs some attention, and quite a few large fallen trees need to be cut away. We have spent approximately 90 hours (collectively) on cleaning up this trail. However, it is our understanding that chainsaws cannot be used except by Oconee Forest approved individuals. If anyone knows of such an individual, we would be glad to show them certain areas that need to be cleared for enjoyable biking. Nonetheless, this trail should be quite enjoyable for any level of biker as soon as some of these obstacles are removed. From the standpoint of pure beauty, we rank this trail a 4, but with increased traffic, clearance, and usage, this trail should become much better, and a ranking of 5 will be warranted.

Recommended Route:
There are several. You can start at the horse park on FSR 1099, or at Wise Creek, or at Highway 83, or at several other points from Smith Mill Road.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ga. Childrens Home, Mabel White, East Macon Park, Hephzibah Childrens Home, Camp Thunder.
