Morningside Nature Preserve

Average Rating:    (3 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 3

This is the first singletrack trail inside Atlanta's Perimeter where bikes are allowed. It's a loop designed and built by Mike Riter. Perfect for kids and noobs. It does have a significant climb, for its short length.

It is a multi-use trail, which means bikers are sharing it with walkers and hikers.
Please remember:
1. Control your speed and be cool around hikers and walkers.
2. No riding if the trail is wet.
3. Stay on the trail.

The trailhead (no sign, yet) is located at 1941 Wellbourne Dr, zip 30306. Parking on the street.

Summary:
There is a "Morningside Nature Preserve" sign at trailhead now. It's a good ride if you are in the area and just want to get out there. It's worth it if you're kind of adventurous and want to explore.

There is another entrance off of the powerline gravel road across from 905 Wildwood Rd NE. Turn left onto the trail at the Trees Atlanta sign. The gravel access road might have some potential in riding.

There are some side trails, very overgrown and have lots of prickly plants, off of the main loop that go to the creek. Might be worth it to check out when there is more water (recovering from a drought still).

Recommended Route:
Going clockwise (left at the fork), there is a warm-up loop to the left that goes down a 'switchback'. Stay right at the next junction and cross the bridge to connect back to the main loop and up the hill. The downhill is a little longer than the counterclockwise direction, which although steeper, has a nice jump at the end which is risky of landing off the trail and hitting a tree. There is also a rock boof after the 'rock garden' going CCW.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
If you have time, I'd recommend riding Mason Mill, Emory (Peavine Creek), and this in one day.

Summary:
Not a bad trail. As the other reviewer mentioned, it is very short and not too technical. But I live in Buckhead so my options are limited if I don't have time to drive. It's nice to get off the pavement and away from traffic. Decent climb, nice short descent. Hopefully they'll find a way to get more trail out there in the future.

Summary:
Very short loop, buffed singletrack, nontechnical, one decent climb, great flow.

Recommended Route:
Enter from Wellbourne Rd, cross narrow bridge, enter loop. I prefer riding it clockwise.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
None, but stay tuned. SORBA is working on more, much larger trail development projects in the City of Atlanta.
