Mitchell Bridge

Single track, with some double track and powerline runs. Not too technical, some nice short climbs and descents. Connector trails with small loops allow you to make the ride as long/ short or easy/ difficult as you want.

Summary:
Some tight single track with some good ups and downs, nice wildlife, a couple stream crossings and a decent workout.

Recommended Route:
I would follow the powerlines up but cut to the right before the dealership, this puts you into the trail directly, i think some more has been destroyed lately. Im putting this up because if you go to your left before you get into the powerline section there is this crazy old graveyard with what looks like 2 grave stones from the 1700's. Its worth checking out. I really like this trail its well worth the ride.

Heritage is the best one ive ridden in the area yet.

Summary:
I've only ridden this trail twice but that was in the span of a week. I heard rumors of this trail but couldn't pin down a good enough description for me to try it out.

I don't particularly agree that it is technical much at all. Just some ups and downs with a few scattered creek crossings. If it was too technical I'd be walking but that rarely happened here.

It starts slow but ends up pretty nice. Overall a very enjoyable in-town ride.

Recommended Route:
The reviews mentioning the bulldozed areas are correct...but I never encountered them on the trail. Disregard the instructions to park at the State Farm office (these are old and the upper section is the cleared portion). Park by the bridge on the other side of the river from Ben Burton Park. There is a small rd next to a neighborhood that leads to some gated building. There is a small trail that leads down towards the river and makes a right under the road. I think the best route is to follow the powerlines up and up gradually bearing right. Here you will be overlooking the back of the new Toyota dealership. Continue following the powerlines until you see a trail to the right. Trails will jut off in both directions but I found a route easy enough. There are some No Tresspassing signs on one side, I assume these border the newly cleared areas. The trail eventually opens up pretty wide. Lots of ups and downs eventually lead to a fence bordering the loop. There are a couple creek crossings in this area. You will eventually dump back out at the powerlines, take a left and your on your way back home.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Similar to 441 trail but more accessible and not so technical. Less walking and more biking. A little longer too I think.

Summary:
Don't give up on the Mitchell Bridge. People have been doing some
maintanence on this great, technical trail that will test all of your abilities. This is THE most technical trail in the Athens area and well worth the time.

Recommended Route:
Go in on the side opposite Ben Burton park. There is a single track headed down towards the river. Follow that until you hit a right turn that leads to the power line. Follow the powerline a little ways and you will see a single track on the right. Follow that to your hearts desire. There are trails scattered about, you can tell the ones that are most ridden. I recommend doing it frontwards and backwards for a real treat.

Hawkes Creek

thanks for getting the word ou IknowUrider. it's utter destruction back in there and it almost seems as though the pattern is a very loud screw you from the property owner. it's sad that a very good trail is destroyed for no reason. i live very close to this trail and enjoyed riding it anytime i needed to let loose. now (in my mind) it's gone. It's very sad day indeed. my scores reflect the fun it used to be. big up yours to the bulldozer driver who wrought this devastation.

Recommended Route:
straight to the property owners house for a good ole fashioned ass whoopin!

Summary:
This trail was fun, but it appears that we have a property owner with there own ideas for proper land use. Someone has taken a bulldozer and flattened a good portion of the trails. There is some good riding, but finding the trail connections around the bulldozing is difficult and kind of kills the buzz. Just wanted to let you fellow Athens riders know whats up if you havent seen the destruction.

441, Heritage.
