Allatoona Creek Park (Cobb County Corps Property)

Located in Acworth, GA, this Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs property consists of 1,450 acres leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Large open fields give way to forest as the property connects to Lake Allatoona. Two creeks, Little Allatoona & Big Allatoona, merge as you near the lake.

Affectionately referred to as ‘The Toona’, Allatoona Creek Park already has several trails in place that cover nearly 13 miles. These include Rusty Bucket, Mason’s Bridge, Turtle Back and Whipper Snapper.

The park will ultimately contain 20 miles of mixed use trail for mountain biking, hiking and running. There will be four single track systems that branch out from the main parking lot. The park will also have a centralized running trail for cross country running, walking, and beginner biking. The mountain biking degree of difficulty for the trails varies from beginner to advanced. A bike skills area is also planned for the park.

Summary:
An easy but fun overall ride. Short of the relatively brief expert section, there are very few technical challenges at Allatoona. That doesn't prevent anyone from having a good time though. I view a good deal of the system as a mini FATS. Lots of smooth flowy areas allow for an above average speed throughout. Beginners can ride most of these trails at slower speed with few dismounts needed. Advanced riders can challenge their cornering limits at speed. The biggest negative is probably the overall length. 15mi isn't enough for this type of speedy trail. Scenery is also a little lacking. Worth a visit or ten...

Recommended Route:
I'm used to doing Rusty & Mason's first, then hit turtle & spur. Throw in Whipper if you have the handling skills.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blankets, Taylor Randhal

Summary:
Nice trails for all kind of users, from beginners there is the Rusty Bucket trail, for intermediate riders the Turtle Back Trail and the Mason's Bridge Trail with nice challenges, and also for advance riders who look for a place for training and fun. Experts will be amazed by the Whipper Snapper trail that is unique in the area. Most trails are fast but some features require good riding skills and allow for developing proficiency in MTB

Summary:
Allatoona is a rapidly growing trail system with a little something for everyone. Its close proximity to Cobb County's population centers make it a great after work destination for training or a casual ride. Elevation gain is minimal but there are enough hills to get your heart rate up. There are lots of fun twisty sections and features to keep you on your toes. Watch SORBA Atlanta's Website and Facebook page for announcements on group rides and work days. Look for a rapid expansion of this trail system in 2013.
