Rock Hawk Effigy Trails

Currently 15 miles of trails (5 more miles are under construction). Something for every ability level: Some fast, flowing, machine-cut trails with views of Lake Oconee and some historic sites. Some tight, technical, rocky, old-school singletrack, with more currently in construction. Very scenic, most of the trail winds through old-growth hardwoods and around Lake Oconee.
Camping available by reservation at Lawrence Shoals and you can ride right out of your campsite onto the trails.

Of course, while you're there you've got to check out the namesake of the trails, the "Rock Hawk" effigy. Built out of stone over 2000 years ago by the Eastern Woodlands Indians.
The trail has a kind of a "Jekyl and Hyde" feel to it. The original 10 miles of trail is very flowing and fast, not very technical, but uber-fast and fun. Added last season are 5 miles of new singletrack. These trails are the polar opposite of the aforementioned 10 miles. Tight, rocky, rooty trail that takes advantage of the available topography in terms of climbing.
Coming this Spring are approximately 5 additional miles of singletrack that will mimic the existing 5 miles. Most have been roughed in and are going to be fun and challenging.
Summary: Tried to find reviews of this trail before the race this past weekend, but there wasn't much. Saw some comments about it being fast and flowy. Just wanted to let you know that they have added some tight and twisty single track. The race loop had us on a mixture of new and old trail. Some of it was big ring small cog double track, and some was brutally slow twisty stuff. I have only ridden it once (the race loop) so I don't know all of the trails. What I did ride had some decent short climbs, a couple switchbacks and some rocks (smallish) to deal with. The techinical stuff isn't scary technical, just slow speed technical. Beginners should have no problem on this trail.

Summary: Awesome trail for all skill levels. Great place for newbies to be introduced to Mountain biking. 11 miles of fast double track that rolls along mixed forest and the shores of Lake Oconee. About 5 miles of tight twisty single track for the more advanced riders. There are several "options" along the single track and you really need to ride THE OUTLAW on the McClean trail. Kick arse. All in all a great venue, there is camping, boating, fishing, hiking and biking.
Recommended Route: I prefer to warm up clockwise on the Effigy trail to the Orange trail. Turn left onto the McClean Trail. At the tramac turn right and follow the signs to the Granite shack trail. Cross the street in front of the guard shack and enter the Hawks head. This runs straight into the Yellow trail which runs into the Blue trail. At this point I go back into the Yellow trail (you back track about 1/2 mile) turn left onto the Talon trail. Follow this to the street and cross both gates and turn left back onto the Effigy trail. Turn left back onto the Orange trail for about 200 yards and hang another left onto the Green trail. Take this nice little downhill about 1 mile and turn right onto the Model T trail, this turns into the 22 trail. At the end turn right back onto the Orange trail and head back into the parking lot. About 13 to 15 miles of riding. You can always mix and match the trails to make any milage combination.

FATS in SC, Dauset in Indian springs Ga, and Red Road Trail system in White Plains Ga.

a trail with something for every rider.
AND MORE TO COME.
Georgia Power/Southern Company is a wonderful partner and has offered the local bike group an enormous amount of leeway. Hats off to Ga. Power and thanks to the many that have participated.
