Pinhoti Trail - Mulberry Gap Rd. to Hwy 52 at Cohutta Overlook. aka P3
1 reviews
 5 of 5

The trail begins with a 1.5 mile ascent from Mulberry Gap Rd to Turkey Mountain. There are some steep grades and challenging switchbacks. Look for a season spring on the northside of the trail as it follows the ridgeline of Turkey Mountain for about .4 miles. Again you will find switchbacks, but descending this time. There are 2 sharp lefthanders, then a right hander before skirting along the side of the mountain to yet another set of switchbacks. These travese a very steep section as assend the southern end of Turkey Mountain and offers great photo opts as the trail stacks up on itself. You'll pass through Countyline Gap (Murray-Gilmer) and head down the old road bed to (you guessed it) another switchback. This begins the final .5 mile ascent to 52 with more steep grades and tight switchbacks. Turn right onto Hwy 52 and look for the conitnuation of the Pinoti Trail on the left. Turn left and travel 800 feet to the Cohutta Overlook for some amazing veiws. Many riders use this section as out & back.

This trail can be linked up with Bear Creek as well as the other sections of the Pinhoti for more distance.

Summary:
My perspective: 36 old, AM/XC rider in good condition, riding for over 12 years. I love this trail. Lots of climbing on hard packed surfaces. Several steep switchbacks and extended climbs. Not for the casual rider but a great challenge for the experienced to advanced. Lots of jumps and superfast decents. Some of the best trail in Ga.

Recommended Route:
We always do this as an "out and back". Park at the Gates Chappel/Bear Creek forrest road. Continue on Gates Chappel, T/R on forrest road 90B, follow to Pinhotti 2, T/R on Mulberry Road, T/L on Pinhotti 3, Take this to major road and return. Can easily be combined with Pinhotti 1 and Bear Creek to make a true epic. Lots of routing options here.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Bear Creek, Pinhotti 1 & 2, Tibbs, Windy Gap, Ft Mountain.
