Bartram Trail

3 Trails. Yellow trail is a 6.5 out/back that connects West Dam to Petersburg. It comes into the Lake Springs loops and heads back out to one of the end points (West Dam or Petersburg). Plans call for it to be extended another 10-11 miles to Wildwood Park. White Trail connects the Yellow Trail to the Lake Springs Fishing Pier. The Red Trail will take you back to the White Trail, or to more sections of Red Trail - confusing! The way it is blazed makes little sense. In reality, there is a 6.5 out/back and two loops, a short connector b/n the loops and finally to really confuse ya, a wishbone shaped set of trails bisecting the fatter loop. Here is the kicker - the loops are not blazed as loops!! Just try to remember the Yellow Trail is the out/back, and the White Trail will take you to/from Yellow Trail/Lake Springs Fishing Pier. The Red Trail will only take you to other sections of Red Trail or back to the White Trail. Over all, the trail is an easy, wide "family" style trail. But it is fun to go fast and fun to ride a singlespeed on. It was built with a Sweco Dozer and Toro Dingo's. It is not technical at all, but the loops do have some optional lines that are descent log rides. Also, the trail can be ridden as a 45 mile P to P by crossing the Dam into S Carolina and riding to Modoc, Turkey Creek and Wine Creek trails. I have fun when I ride the trail because I keep my expectations of going fast high and riding techy stuff very low. It is a great trail to take a first timer, a young child or someone coming back from an injury. If you like sorting out things in your mind like you can on a road ride - come ride here. I actually had 4 great ideas on this trail the last time I rode it! I call it singletrack, but it is WIDE singletrack. It is in the SE, so it should narrow up unless the ACOE is serious about maintaining/accessing it w/ a 4-wheeler :-(

Summary:
This trail continues to get better. It is still a big-ring, flowing trail that invites speed all along its 6.5 mile distance (if you include the loops, add two more miles for a round trip speedfest of 15 miles that can be done in approximately an hour). It is maturing into a nice singletrack trail.

There are not too many better trails around for night riding. It is not a technical trail and is fast and fun for night riding. Whatta blast!

The local SORBA/CSRA chapter has several members that take pride in keeping this trail groomed. Additionally, the trail is located on Army Corps of Engineer property and they take care of issues such as the huge hornets nest hanging ten feet from the trail in '05!

If you are into camping or RV'ing, this is the trail to base from. Petersburg Campground has awesome facilities and the trail starts right outside campsite #1.

Recommended Route:
Start from the gravel parking lot just outside the gate of Petersburg Campground. It is an out-and-back trail. There are kiosks located at every major intersection and those contain very nice maps.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Horn Creek (Lick Fork Lake), Turkey Creek, Wine Creek, Baker Creek State Park, Hickory Knob State Park.

Summary:
This trail was my first "single track" and it's probably the best in the area for a newbie to ride to get a feel for mountain biking. It's fairly long but the ease of this trail allows you to ride it from start to finish (7 mile one way) very quickly.

Recommended Route:
Park at the West Basin Rec Area just before the Dam, or you can park at Petersburg Campground (have to pay a fee to park). From Augusta, take Washington Rd. to Pollards Corner, hang a right and the West Basin Rec area is about 6 miles on your left. Park in the gravel lot immediately after turning, before the ranger hut.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Wine Creek, Turkey Creek, Augusta Canal

Ridden Trail:
Every few months

Summary:
I went back to this trail after a few months of not riding it. No great changes to note, but I will say that the Yellow Trail seems to have the best flow. The White and Red Trails are obviously not getting as much use as the Yellow Trail. This is probably because the loops can get confusing and just don't flow as well. The loops do have 4 nifty logs rides (the kind you get up on and ride the length of the log).

Recommended Route:
I'd start on the Yellow Trail at either end and ride it to the White Trail. Take it over and ride the Red Trails and then take the White Trail back to the Yellow Trail and go the opposite direction from which you came. Then when you get to the other end, ride the Yellow Trail back to your car.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Hickory Knob, Baker Creek, Modoc, Turkey and Wine Creek.

Summary:
I always fun on this trail. It is twisty and fast with some great lake views. The wide tread allows for high speeds or just cruising along. The loops may offer the best riding, but it's really all pretty good. Nothing technical about it except for an a few optional log rides that you would have to have an eye for to hit. Bring the kids and first timers - will be cool to see them enjoying their first ride off-raod! For others it is a super fast "freeway" - great for singlespeeds. Will be a even better ride when the other 10 miles are finished!

Recommended Route:
I usually start at West Dam and ride the Yellow Trail the loops, make a right onto the White Trail, then a right onto the connector over to the Red Trail. I usually ride a few different sets of loops in the Red/White Trails as the fat loop has a wishbone set of trails in the middle of it. Eventually, I make it back to the Yellow trail and take it to Petersburg. Then return on the Yellow Trail the whole way.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
45 mile ride: Petersburg Campground to West Dam via the loops on this trail, across the Dam into SC, across 28 onto Garett RD,Red Oak Grove,Morgan,Hwy 23, to Modoc Trail, Connector to Turkey Creek and Wine Creek Trails. 2 states, 45 miles P to P.
