Yellow River

Two loops - River Loop (approx. 3.5 miles) and Creek Loop (longer, not sure of exact mileage). River Loop is easier than Creek Loop, climb/technical-wise. Marked skill level as "all" because of differences between the two loops.
From Atlanta - take Hwy. 78 east, away from town, past Stone Mountain, to the West Park Place exit. Take a right (go south), go a tad over 3 miles. Look for Juhan Rd. on the right (just after the crest of a hill - be on the lookout). Go approx. 1.5 miles down Juhan, you will see the parking lot on the left.
Cars left after dark are subject to towing, so be warned.
Summary: I rode here because it was the most reviewed trail on MTBR. it was pretty cool with some small climbs and decent singletrack. It was though, way too short, but better than nothing. It seemed that the better parts were the (do not ride) trails.
Summary: GATR has convinced the county to reopen several of the old river side trails, the little train is back on its throne and many of the old single track loops have been reopened.
Recommended Route: Many loops, several miles reopened.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Blankets

Summary: I have ridden YR for 15+ years. Moved away for 5 yrs., moved back in 07. Someone's been tardin' it up, huh? Whoever did that s*** should shoot themselves. Incredibly sad. What happend?
Recommended Route: Riding repeatedly over the responsible partys face while attempting to spin out. What chumps.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Rich Mtn., da' bomb.

Summary: I have read all of the contributers' reviews and thoughts on this trail, and I'd like to throw my hat in the ring. I did not ride Yellow River before SORBA overhauled the trail system, and from what I hear it used to be a great ride. Now, it is not the most exciting or technically challenging trail system I have ever pedaled, but it is not nearly as bad as all the naysayers make it out to be. Bikers, we're talking about a trail system with several loop configurations offering a good workout in the burbs. Yes, Blankets Chicopee, and points north are cooler systems, but with a the price of gas on the rise with no relief in sight, I am so thankful for a local system that is fun to ride and only a stone-throw away. I love XC riding, and this is a great place to get in some miles in between longer weekend rides. And, good news, SORBA is working to open up some of the famed old trails again. Rumors have it that several miles of singletrack are going to be brought back to life. Excellent!
Recommended Route: Start on the river side. Start pedaling away from the restrooms, across the pedestrian bridge and up to the trail head. Go right and follow the bike trails to make a beginner loop - great warmup. Return to the lot and go across the street. Doing a horse loop front and back followed by a bike loop front and back offers about 12 miles of riding. Cool down with another River Side loop for a 16 mile trip.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Ft. Yargo, Chicopee, Blankets, Big Creek, Sope Creek

Summary: I've been riding this trail on the weekends for the past seven years and it's been the best trail for several reasons in the past. There was an easy side, a technical side, good climbs and rewarding decents, lots of great folks out to ride with, ect. Now since they've redesigned it, I can't help but HATE it! They've destroyed this trail and I'm so pissed off, I can hardly write this review thinking about it. Seems like you spend the whole time lost. Well, that's just me because I'm looking for pieces of the old trails. They're all gone. I actually rode according to the marked sections last wknd and I was not very impressed. It's an OK trail but nothing like it was. You spend too much time looking for the best route because there's a split trail every 10ft. And if you pick the wrong one, you'll end up right back where you started. Also, it's just a lot of time climbing up and down, up and down - no big rewarding down hill section at all because their's too many cut offs and sharp turns when it starts getting good.
This trail can be very rewarding if you spend a lot of time mapping out a route (even though it's well marked) but there are just so many different interruptions in the trails, it will take several hours to do this. This is a good trail for exercise but as far as the fun factor, it's been neutered. A once legendary and great trail, is now just an OK trail. Personally, it's just not worth it to drive all the way over there every weekend any more. Time to find a new spot.
Recommended Route: Hell, I don't know yet. Still trying to piece together a route. Suggest you do the same.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Chattahochee Park. Not as long but a great down hill section.
