Sumac Creek Trail

What goes down must come up on this intermediate loop trail near Georgia's Cohutta Wilderness. A cutoff disects the loop, making a few options. I'd recommend going all the way out the 3.5 mi forest road to the singletrack first, as it is a boring mostly uphill drag at the finish of grueling climb up those famous
Georgia switchbacks. If you like that sort of punishment, turn left on the singletrack that starts at the top of the loop, about 500 ft down from guardrail. The first part of this fine singletrack has switchbacks, too, so either way you get an up and a down. Much of this trail is on old narrow roadbed, with a track well worn and graded for lots of intermediate climbing and downhills, with a couple of short, steep sections that many will walk. Two creek crossings and that Appalachian bush effect make this a great summer ride, but its nice year round with clear weather. Horse and hiker use, also. Roads are opened during spring and fall hunting seasons.
In Chatsworth take US 411 north from its intersection with US 76/GA 52 (L/west side,1.3 mi N of courthouse)11.6 mi to Cisco Baptist Church. Turn R on Old Ga. 2,go 3.2 mi to game check station. Turn R up steep hill(this road can be rough on low slung vehicles), go about 2 miles to trail parking circle on R
Summary: This trail had some amazing downhill sections with plenty of fun obstacles but you pay dearly for them. I will not be riding this trail again. I consider myself to be in decent physical shape (run about three miles every other day), and this trail almost killed me. I got lost because all the sign posts point to "sumac creek." In other words, there are no alternatives, unless you know where you are going, you just have to guess how to get back to your car. You can either go right at the fork and go towards "sumac creek" or go left towards "sumac creek." Supposedly, there is a bailout halfway through, but good luck finding it. Overall, if you are in amazing shape or just love climbing up mountains for miles and miles; you should love this trail. Otherwise, go somewhere else. Also, the road to get to the trail is not very friendly for small cars.
Recommended Route: Sumac Creek to Sumac Creek and hop back on Sumac Creek.
Other recommended trails in the same area: I don't remember but I think parts of Ft. Mountain were similar.

Summary: The nice section of singletrack downhill has been ruined by fallen trees from last year's hurricane. Makes the ride unbearable and we turned back.

Summary: Overall an excellent trail! Its easy to get to. The fire roads leading to the trailhead have been cleaned up. I was there just after the remnants of a hurricane, and there were several blowdowns, so be aware. We carried our bikes over at least a mile, but it was worth it! Definately a fun ride, and a workout. The trail has some steep, areas. If you don't like climbs, you might want to think twice. the outere loop is 10.7 miles. The last 3 miles are on fireroad with a nice mix of rolling hills.
Recommended Route: The outer loop has 2 stream crossings.
Other recommended trails in the same area: I spend most of my time over on the bull mountain side of the world.

Summary: A great loop and absolutely worth the drive to Cisco. The trail doesn't get a lot of use in the summer so watch out for briers that grow over the trail (I look like I just got a new kitten!). This trail is not overly technical, except for the switchbacks, and more specifically those going downhill. I was worried about going up from the creek based upon the previous reviews, but other than the initial 200 yds or so from the creek, I thought it was very rideable going up the switchbacks. The final stretch on the fire road will get your attention even if you made it through the switchbacks, although stronger riders probably won't have too many problems with it. Not as much singletrack as some would like, but I like singletrack on old logging roads so it was fine by me. If you want a good workout and don't like super technical trails, I would highly recommend this trail.
Recommended Route: I did the loop clockwise as indicated in the Alex Nutt book. I would probably do it that way again next time I go.

Summary: Awesome. After today, this is my new favorite trail. I've been riding in Colorado 4 times, and this trail comes real close to beating all of that. It's not travelled much. (thats great) The downhills are a total scream! When you finish all of the climbing this trail has, you feel like you have accomplished something. The uphill switchbacks are TOUGH... but fight the push! RIDE IT ALL!!! Lots of water breaks for big air too.
Recommended Route: Go past the gate and take the singletrack left. At the 5 way intersection, hard right down the singletrack, at the first clearing, down the singletrack to the fork then left on the fork. Next clearing starts the fireroad. Take it to the cars or cut off right onto well marked singletrack for more Sumac Trail. You will be riding over some of the same terrain at the very end.
