Sope Creek

Several downhills rough and rocky. Able to gain alot of speed. Some parts are very rocky but fun to ride fast. There is a lake in the middle of the trail great to sit and relax. Many great trails that break off of main trail. They are single track with logs to jump and climb over. Depending on the trail you pick one is extremely rocky and rough but insanely fun. The only thing is that there are many joggers and moutain bikers that also ride the trail so watch out.

Summary:
Please be advised that the only legal trail for mtn biking at this time (Sept 09) is the 2.5 mile doubletrack that goes from the 5k gravel loop to the Paper Mill Rd car park. None of the singletrack is open to bikes -- never has been. By abiding by the rules, you'll help us, SORBA Atlanta, as we work with the National Park Service to open up to 12 miles of the trail system to biking.

Summary:
This trail has been completely revamped and is badder (in a good way) than ever. I think they were getting too much erosion from that last stupid effort they made, so they closed the main trails and opened up a lot of the side trails to bikes now, most of it is all single track and there is some awesome, really fast downhill stuff that rocks. Granted its kind of short, so you can ride it a few times and hit it a few different ways to get a nice ride in. I live in town so this rocks for me during the week after work. Give it a shot, its worth it now!

Recommended Route:
find it!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
None, Big Creek blows, all the good stuff is up north

Summary:
A mountain bike trail in name only. Since the last round of maintenance the trail is practically useless for bikes. Yesterday it was choked with dogs that weren't on leashes and walkers 3-across that won't part for oncoming traffic. The pedestrians have taken over this trail which is sad because bikes aren't allowed on ANY of the trails the hikers get to use.

While all the other trails in the area get better and better, this place has gone to the dogs. Literally, I almost ran over several dogs yesterday, one while taking a poo in the middle of the trail.

This place used to be a unique spot you could work on your climbing and descending skills, but no more.

Recommended Route:
Big Creek is closest, then Blankets Creek, but avoid Sope Creek unless you like riding laps on the jogging track.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blankets Creek is the best. Big Creek is working to catch up, but other than the Freeride Course it has, it's too rocky for my taste and has cut up my tires.

Summary:
I rate this trail a 4 because there is some awesome riding "off the beaten path" if you are willing to risk it (can get cited by the park rangers, but as many times as I've ridden it, I've never come across one!) I start up at the Paper Mill Rd parking lot. Starts off with some fun whoops. At the bottom is a lake to the right. Look to the left for a trail going down into the woods. At he very bottom is a small techy creek to cross and then an immediate short & steep hill climb. At the top go right on the well-used walking trail for about 100 ft before it spits you out to the bike trail. Climb up the rocky section. You will flow up and down until you get to a Loggy, rocky, short downhill section. Make sure you've put your bike in low gear by the time you get to the bottom because there is an immediate short & steep hill climb. Once you get up and around the tree, the climb up is continuous but not too bad. When you get to the "T" intersection, go left and up the rocky section. Once you start going downhill, It wont let up for a good 3 minutes or so of twists, rocks, log steps and whoops - very fun section. You will be spit out onto the walking path at the very bottom. Veer right, catch your breath, go straight and over the bridge. Keep going straight about another 100 yards. Just as the path turns sharp left, you want to take the "off the beaten path" trail to the right and up into the forest. FROM THIS POINT ON YOU MUST YEILD TO PEDESTRIANS!!! Its a super short uphill climb. Stay left! Can you cross the log bridge over the creek without falling? Maybe you should walk it the first few times like I did. Stay left again. You will end up following alonside the creek and will see some manholes. Cross the bridge, follow the trail left and cross the bridge again. Enjoy the scenery and make sure you have your lungs because here comes the Huffer & Puffer hill climb. How many stops do you have to take??? If you make it up in one try, then YOU DA (WO)MAN! Regain your lungs and go right. Dont take the left trail down the hill. Stay right and you will come to a office building. Follow the trail left and parallel the building. Climb up to the parking lot. Go left when you are leaving the building's parking lot and follow the sidewalk to the Coca-Cola office building (about a 1/4 mile up the road.)

Recommended Route:
You need to get behind the Coke building to find the trail again (I stay to the left of the Coke building and turn sharp right at the dumpsters) Follow the open trail about 100 yards and take the first right into the woods. It is all downhill from here - and a pretty demanding, technical downhill section to the bottom. Once at the bottom go right and follow the bridge to all the way to the main walking path (it shoots you out close to the Interstate Pkwy North entrance). YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO CONCENTRATE ON YEILDING TO PEDESTRIANS!!! Stay right of the bathrooms, cross over the bridge and immediately take the first left. Ride all the way down to the "T" and turn right (You are now back on the path you rode earlier to get to the "Off The Beaten Path" section, except going the opposite way. Be on the lookout for the trail going up into the woods to the left. You will now be climbing up, up, up slowly but surely. Navigate the log steps, slickrock, and pedestrians (also watch out for other bikers shooting at you from above - remember; this was the 3 minutes or so of twists, rocks, log steps and whoops you did). All you need to do now is make your way back to the beginning!

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blankets Creek, Big Creek, Conyers Horse Park (Further away but worth it)
