Iron Mountain

A fairly tough climb to top of mountain, lots of rocks, the downhill is well-worth the climb, a few stream crossings which are fun to jump (big rock on one of them to launch off), leads to major water crossing which you more than likely will swim or wade across (caution, water can run high after rainfall), nice easy 2 mile ride at end back to campground...some of the best views around..(ie Bull Mountain, Stonewall Loop)

Summary:
Great trail. Well maintained. Follow signs from the horsey parking area. If you cross the bridge and park on the other side of the river you have a NE bound trail which I gave up on but it was fun. SW takes you along river to crossing and I'm not sure where after that.
I took trail from horsey parking area up climb and down hill. There are several off shoot roads but I didn't try those. Apparently the climb can go two miles more but I was running late on the light and couldn't try that either. It's a great area. The posters say it is very popular and for that reason please be very consientious about your trash and usage, etc. Be nice so we can all enjoy.

Recommended Route:
Clockwise.
I gave this an aerobic difficulty for the climb and distance. It's not hard just persistent.
I gave this a technical difficulty for the same reason, but it's not a too rocky of a trail or too complex. It just has a long climb. You will need some brakes for the down hill or not. It's a lot of fun.

Aside:
Someone was marking their trail with budlight cans. They were brand new, shiny. The people I rode with picked up about a case and there were still more left behind. It boggles the mind how completely stupid some people are. Someone carried in all that beer but they couldn't carry out some empty cans. It's a wonder they knew how to get them open.

There must be more that I didn't reach. Please post directions. Thanks.

First off, the trail fee has gone up to a whopping $8!! For this you would at least expect some trail maintenance. Nope. . . blow downs everywhere. Horse traffic has chewed the trail to a muddy quagmire and there was tons of horse crap on the trail. I swear, it had to be literally tons! Someone has taken a bulldozer to the fairly tight downhill section that was always so fun to ride so now it is a pretty boring 15 ft wide thoroughfare down the mountain. Still, it was fun to ride despite all this. There are some moderately technical sections to climb and might be worth the trip just to say you had ridden it. My suggestion: Save $8 and ride Sumac Creek. Same area, no parking fee, perfectly maintained trails, better technical sections and much easier creek crossings.

Summary:
this is a great trail! you really have to work in some spots but it pays off with some awesome downhills. my main recomendation go in the summer time ! otherwise the rivers are way to high and cold, you start off with a wide stream that you should be able to ride through with maybe a foot of water. at about half-way there is a river fording after a wicked downhill, that is fun. the fording is about waist to mid torso deep so you can go for a swim and kick back on the big rocks. this is one fun summer trail.
