Gainesville College Trail

The Gainesville College trail is a single track loop. It is a fun, little trail (about 3.5 miles in and out of the woods) with lots of twists and turns. The best way to take this trail, and the more challenging way, is to start at the bottom by the pond. If you start this way, then most of the trail is uphill (if you can call it that). A great place to introduce someone to MTB. The trail can be muddy at times.
from the Atlanta area you will have to take I-85 north, then exit onto I-985 north. Travel north on I-985 until you get to exit 4 which is Oakwood. Get off on that exit and then take a left. At the third light you will see Gainesville College on the right. I recommend entering the college at the first right after the light. Take a right into the college here and drive past the tennis courts and the first building on the left. After the building on the left, take a left into the parking lot. This is where you park, and the trails are towards the woods and building at the end of the driveway.
Summary: this trail hasnt been reviewed in a while, so I thought I would let everyone know it is still there...go couple hundred yards past the tennis courts at Gainesville College and you will see the trails down on your left...and to the right of the lake. I have been out of MTB for a few years and just getting back, so thought I would try this one. It is a nice easy trail with some twists and turns...good for a beginner with only a couple of drops over 3 feet, but the tires will stay on the ground for the most part...even on those drops. But most of it is pretty smooth with a few roots, rocks, etc. I am almost 6'4" and 230 lbs and there are some pretty narrow areas for "big people" with a few low overhangs from tree limbs. Good for a basic aerobic workout if you go around a couple or three times...if you want more, go to Chicopee Woods which is a couple of miles down the road.
Recommended Route: I went counter clockwise...if you want a better aerobic workout, go down past the trail entry to the dam on the lake...if you start there, you will get more uphill...

Summary: Gainesville Trail is fun for advanced through beginner. It's tight in areas and if you are flying you can easy meet a tree around several tight single track corners. There are some inclines and whooptees to get air. If you feel you aren't being challenged go faster? I think it is 4 miles without using the walking trail they use for the Gainesville race. I love to ride this trail forwards and (backwards before the Race) sorry folks. I recommend this if you are near it.
Strengths: Well defined Good for all levels
Weaknesses: No grinding up hills.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Yellow river (river side) and Water Works Trail

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This was my first real MTB experience. I think this trail was just about right for a beginner. Made the entire loop once. The second we skipped the lower section. It was bit muddy and time was short. Just enough dips and switchbacks to be fun. Not too many killer hills. Great first (or second) timers trail. I ran into some experienced riders there were out for pure speed.
Recommended Route: Counter clockwise
Other recommended trails in the same area: The trails over at Chicopee (less than 5 miles away) are next on my list. Also, I hear the trails at Fort Yargo are nice.

Summary: Easy trail for a good workout if you need it. The first time I rode this trail it was full of ice and slush and so it took me about 35 mins, but I have gotten that down to around 20 mins now, barring any incident(s). I do believe 16 is possible, but if you are just puttin' around as the one guy said, NO! More like 25 to 30 mins. Nothing technical about it, but lots of twists and turns which can slow your speed (watch for those narrow parts when you are going hard into them). The first part, before the lake crossing is easier than the second part, although with the exception that it gets a bit muddy, is not that difficult either. It's a great trail for the beginner and a great workout trail for the Intermediate, just looking for a fast workout to get their HR going. I plan on doing it once a week, just for that sole purpose, but for more technical riding and hills, Chicopee Woods is your best bet. As for more climbing going clockwise than counter...ummmmmmm, maybe some, although you do get a downhill boost on the pavement there at the beginning, but I like cranking up that to the parking lot to finish. (see I do road bikes to)!
Recommended Route: I started at the trailhead and went counterclockwise
