Flint River Trail

`There are more trails down here than anyone would guess. It can be a little confusing because there is a combination of old dirt roads, jeep trail, double track and single track. Once you get down by the river, just follow it, the trails follow the river pretty closely. I figure you can ride down here for years and never see all of it, but it would be worth it. I try to stay on the single track by the river, these trails can be farily technical because of the sand, surprising turns, fallen limbs, and narrow passes, but if you dont like this kind of stuff get a road bike. Your first time out go slow. In the summer these trails become pretty bushy, but definitely still rideable. From the Power Dam down to Oglethorpe Bridge is about 5 miles of trail, you can cross the river, at the end of this trail, at the Albany State Amphitheater, ride over the road crossing heading left and pick up the trail at the Water Pump House taking a left at Marylands Fried Chicken, follow the road right and the pump house is on the left. The trail is behind the pump house. Follow the fire road down past an established trail to a trail junction and go right. Following this trail back towards the Dam is the better part of the trail. Beautiful single track not too tight, still a little bushy, bring your salad dressing youll end up eating some of it. Real fun built up turns and some steep gulleys that can still be walked through for those of you without health insurance. Doing both sections is a good 2 hour ride. There is road access at several points along the trail, watch out for people fishing and hiking. If you live in South Georgia this is the place you have been looking for

Trail Directions
From the corner of Philema and Jefferson Road, turn East on Philema, take the first road on your right, which is Jewel. Follow Jewel to its end at a stop sign, turn left and drive into the Power Plant property, it is public land. These are all dirt and gravel roads, not maintained. Follow the gravel road around to the right. You can access the trail by taking a left on another gravel road which leads to a bridge, the trail starts on your right, just before the bridge. You can pick up the same trail a little farther down by staying on the original gravel road, going past the left turn and following the road to a large depression on your left and right, that is locally known as the clay pit. You can practice tricks and ride the slopes here, but to get on the trail, follow the jeep trail down and to the right, then the trail turns to your left. Follow this through field and forest until you get to the old elevated rail road tracks, turn left down by the river and pick up single track to your right

Summary:
October 2006 Trail Update:

Right now there are 4.5 miles of trails from behind the Albany Civic Center to Wells Ave and 4.5 miles back. It's still a down and back trail. The trails are in good shape and new loops are being added each fall. The main trail runs along the Flint River and there are now at least six loops that break off from the main trail. The local bike shop (Cycle World 229.435.1678) has a map. The best public trails within a hour of Albany by far.

Recommended Route:
The Albany Civic is located at 100 W, Oglethorpe Blvd Albany 31701.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
We ride some private trails in Smithville that are great trails and well maintained on about 50 acres. Email me at darwin@crosspointbaptist.org if you are intersested in joining us one weekend.

Summary:
This is a good combination trail, that has good flow and intermediate/advance technical sections. Don't look for any climbs or big decents here.

Recommended Route:
It is an out and back. Doesn't matter which way you ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Haven't found any in Southern Georgia.

Summary:
This hidden trail starts behind the James H. Gray Civic Center on HWY 82 in Albany. It has a pretty technical start that opens up a bit and has some awesome views of the Flint river, running right along it on much of the course. The local bike shop keeps these trails well maintained, and they are a joy to ride. It has several climbs and drops, sand, nice winding single track under the river forest canopy of trees, which provide a nice shady route for most of the trail, some pretty hairy sections right along a bluff bank of the river, with about a 25 feet drop down to the water's edge - definitely a section to get your adrenaline pumping!

Recommended Route:
Park at the newly developing River Walk area, or behind the Civic center.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
There is also a section of concrete multi-use trails that go North from this same area that are fun to ride and get a warm up or cool down ride in.

Summary:
This review is to update everyone, that most people now park at the James H. Gray civic center ( in the back parking lot ). Most of the riding is now done on the newer South River Trail. This trail now goes all the way to Wells Ave. The trail is an out and back, appox. 5 miles one way.
The trail has alot to offer, from fast flowing single track, to leg killing sand, several steep drops and climbs, and one section right on the edge of a 25 ft root and tree infested drop to the river. Surprisingly good trail for South Ga.

Recommended Route:
The James H. Gray civic center is on highway 82 ( Olglethorpe blvd. ) in down town Albany, Ga. Approx. 45 min. From I-75 Cordele And I-75 Tifton

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The North East River Trail, if you want more.

Favorite Trail:
Flint River (Albany)

Summary:
We start at the Power Dam behind Paul Eames Stadium. The trails start as Jeep trails on this side of the river, then turn into 4 wheeler trails. Plenty of hills and climbs. I love the beauty of biking along the river. When you get to the big ditch it turns into more of a single track. After the ditch you can stay along the river or go down a little (away from the river) along the dirt road on the other side of the ditch and pick up on a nice Jeep trail.

Once you get to Albany State just after the Oglethorpe Bridge, climb the big grassy hill and enter into the ASU parking lot. Go back to Oglethorpe and cross the bridge to the road by the Civic Center. Go south towards the bak parking lot of the Civic Center. At the far corner a new trail picks up along the river. This trail is NOT for beginners. Lots of fun, but a lot of work. This trail right now (Fall 2003) goes down to the Oakridge Bridge.

Strengths:
Great hills, turns, and some awesome views along the river

Weaknesses:
Little sand south of Civic Center
