Iron Hill Trail
2 reviews
 3.5 of 5

YES! There is a Mountain Bike Trail at Red Top Mountain State Park. It is the Iron Hill Trail. (100 years ago the site of old iron ore pit mining). Go about 1 mile past bridge and over lake past visitors center (take right fork past Administration offices) and look for the sign on right for the Iron Hill Trail (Mountain Biker Logo on sign!). Gravel road and entrance w much parking on right.

Designed primarily for beginners and mid level w a gravel double track. It is about a 4 mile loop … IF you stay on gravel. Look for "five points" about half the way around (as you go from one side of the peninsula to the other) at this intersection of the loop and several old roads go south (up hill) and climb to explore old roads and some single track that will lead to highest point of peninsula...look for steep trails down to lake where there are numerous sandy beaches.

Having spoken w the rangers several times they explained the plans for additional 8 miles of trails that will loop around the upper peninsula. (Total of 12 miles) Four mile loop can be a great CV workout when trail is not crowded ( it hardly ever is)... Be sure to explore the upper peninsula some good climbs there!

Much of the trail winds through an older (40 -50 yrs old) long-closed campground... look for the old hand pump wells at several locations around loop...

Happy trails!

Summary:
I won't expand on what the previous reviewer stated as they were correct on all counts. What I will add is that this is a good, laid back trail for a beginner. It is as flat as they come and is wide with good lines of sight. I utilized this track for my wife as she was getting used to the sport of mountain biking. It would be a much more child friendly trail than some of the other local trails as well.

Recommended Route:
4.25 mile loop clockwise

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blankets Creek

Summary:
Four mile gravel loop w several branches into the upper peninsula at the Five Points intersection. Great views w deer, turkey, raccoons in the afternoons.

Originally proposed as a 12 mile asphalt loop of the Iron Cove Peninsula the route is now gradually becoming a gravel single-track. The money ran out and there will be no asphalt...

Well maintained by the great folks who run Red Top Mountain State Park. Rarely crowded. A good place to hit after work from NW Atlanta area…always open (even after heaviest of rains) as gravel base provides stable base.

I use the 4 mile loop course to time myself on 2 to 4 laps (8-16 miles) and ride it flat out. For some rougher & steeper climbs go explore the upper (higher elevations) peninsula. I rate overall as a 4 which is stretching... but this is a great start fo this State Park. Ideal place for beginners or intermediates. Much Potential for expansion on upper peninsula.

This area was a thriving iron ore mining community in the 1840’s till the 1920’s. There are some steep tailings mounds and deep ore cuts to explore.

Not a Blankets or Bear Creek but close by and never crowded on a week night … or on the weekend!

Recommended Route:
Clockwise from the parking area.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blankets Creek, Bear Creek, Raccoon Mountain in Chattanooga
