Silver Comet Rail Trail

We have here about 5 miles of 2 lane paved trail, almost flat. Then starting at Floyd Rd we have unpaved trail for 5 flat miles (which will be paved some day). Then we have more paved flat trail for many many miles. I have heard it continues past Rockmart, and goes through a mountain at one point.
From I 285, take exit 10 which is South Cobb Drive and head North. Drive a couple miles to the East West Connector and turn left. Drive a couple miles until you see a marked parking lot on the left side of the road, this is at an intersection with lights (sorry, can't remember the name of the road). This is one entrance to the trail, there are several. All have signs and designated parking areas.
Summary: I am adding to my previous review. We have extended our work from the Florence Road Trailhead to the 23 mile marker. Of this 12 mile stretch, over 10 miles is in the dirt. The farther West you go, the tougher the hills get. Several will require a Spiderman position on the bike. Be careful on the downhills until you are familiar with the trails, several of the creek bottoms require some technical skills. More updates later

Recommended Route: Start at Rambo's Nursery, ride to the Pumkinvine Tressel on the SCT then exit left onto the MTB sextion of the trail. An out and back will be 25 miles in about 3 hours.
Summary: The Silver Comet starts at Smyrna and Runs past Rockmart then is adjoined to hwy278 via a bike lane that takes you to Cedartown to resume the railtrail section then on to Alabama. Counting the hwy section, this puts the trail at 61 miles long.
The GOOD news is that the Pathfoundation is letting some local cyclists develop the equestrian trail that runs along side of the Silver Comet as single track. The sections that we are working on will start at the 13 mile marker to the 23 mile marker. Of this 10 mile section, 8 or more of it will be in the dirt. There are technical sections, mainly near creek bottoms. As far as climbing, it ranges from easy to impossible. There is one Hike a Bike so far near the treatment plant, you will know it when you get to it. We will have 90% of the work done by the end of February, 2006.
If they eventually allow us to develop a single track on the northside, this will be great out and back.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: This ride is great for myself and my 11 year old son. We've experienced a good crew of walkers, riders and bladers that observe etiquette and respect eachother on the trail. The trail itself is quite true and even, with gentle inclines. It is well sign posted, clean & maintained, has sufficient breakstops, restrooms, and the depot is well placed for hire and repairs.
I would like to see more water outlets onlong the trail.
We travelled from Dekalb county to ride this excellent trail, so thanks to all the rate payers in Cobb !!!!

Summary: Most of these reviews have TOTALLY missed the point. You have focused on the pavement, while there is plenty of challenging trail ALONGSIDE the paved trail. Part of it is horse trail, singletrack, water crossings, steep ascents/descents, and a number of side trails with uncounted miles of trail. This place is a well kept secret. Plan on getting dirty. From whet I can tell, about 3/4 of the paved trail has a dirt path alongside. The trails seem little used, and could use a bit of maintenance--clearing brush, low hanging branches, etc.--but the trail is plenty fun. You will have to connect the various trails with the paved trail due to road crossings, private property, etc. Clear the low branches and that damned barb-wire weed and I give it five stars.
Recommended Route: Starting at Hiram, going east or west.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: Do not ride this trail during anything but an "off" hour. The next time I go it will be at sunrise or during the week. The pedestrians, roller-bladers, and young children swarm this trail on its eastern portions, making it very dangerous. They don't seem to have any concept of keeping to the right or acknowledging the danger of mixed use. I don't understand why pedestrians are even allowed on it. Otherwise, a fantastic fixed-gear trail that can't be beat for early season tempo / LSD riding. The absence of hills did a number on my back, though.
Recommended Route: Any trail head as far from Cobb County as possible
Other recommended trails in the same area: none.
