Cross Country Rider Summary: I haven't ridden this trail in a while but it is one of my all time favorites because of the long climb to start.
It is not a trail to ride solo but that's how I've done it several times. It's amazing to read about the wildlife in other reviews. I haven't seen that, but all the other trail conditions are familiar.
One of the things that I like about this trail is that it isn't polished and maintained. Yeah it could be a faster, cleaner downhill but the obstacles are part of nature, life and reality and all that zen stuff.
Recommended Route: Basically you go up and you ride down. Clockwise, but I'll bet the counter clockwise or ride up the down trail and then descend it again would be good rides too.
I have turned left half way up 79 to the ?? something waterfall area. Then if you go to the highway at the bottom you can climb the road and descend back to Helen. That was fun to see the faces on the road riders.
Other recommended trails in the same area: There are other trails near here but I don't know the names.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Nice long climb. Its august and I have seen five black bears on FS 79. Bring spray if you have it. Downhill is very overgrown in some places. Plan on briars getting you. Very remote. Recommended Route: clockwise Other recommended trails in the same area: chico, TN divide (nicer route, same FS 79)

, from Atlanta Summary: Needing to train, I pulled this ride out of the Falcon guide because of it's sick elevation profile. The FS road up is typical FS road tread. At mile 3-5 there is some steeper sections but rideable even for even a big guy like me. The FS downhill requires absolute attention because its littered with baby heads. One cool note - for about 25 yards I was chasing a big bobcat. The singletrack downhill is not well maintained and baby heads and logs are hidden under growth. This would be a better downhill on a longer travel bike. I'm going to give it a medium rating for XC riders...I might rate it higher for DH with a shuttle to the top. Recommended Route: The typical route...see some other descriptions for the exact directions. Leace from woody's and climb, climb, climb. NOTE: When you get to the end of the FS road, the trail is to the right but slightly tricky because a hiking trail goes to the right upwards. The correct trail is parallel but just about 25 yards past, not ridden very much so it's hard to see. Other recommended trails in the same area: Unicoi / Helen MTB Trail...excellent, fun trail. Bull Mountain. All

, from Tallahassee, Fl. Summary: This trail was a thigh burner. The first 9 miles is all up hill. Loose gravel with little shade. It was tough but a good workout. The downhill was the best or sometimes the worst part. The fire road portion was very rocky but good lines were there. The singletrack downhill was tough. Many roots and rocks(boulders) were hidden by plants and other brush. Got very slick in the rain. I recommend this trail if ya want a good workout, great views and a ride to remember. Recommended Route: clock wise Other recommended trails in the same area: Helen, Tsali

, from Atlanta, GA USA Summary: I have to disagree with Chris below on a few points. First and foremost I would not change a thing as far the rock sections go on the trail. This trail has the most continually demanding tread of any in GA. You and your bike will be rattled silly. I can say this with authority after having ridden it twice in one afternoon aboard a 40+ lb freeride tank of a bike in full armor. I used this as warm-up ride before a recent trip to B.C. If anyone thinks that this trail is too rough do not even think about going up to B.C. Just about every trail I rode up there was made up of this kind of tread, but far steeper. I will agree that some selective trail maintance would go along way towards making a very good trail a great trail, but it is very tough for Woody to get help with this as accesability is tough and volunteers few. I really love this ride, but I acually wish it was even tougher on the way down. Still it is alot of fun. Recommended Route: Have a 4 wheeldrive or a good frontwheel drive to haul you up to the top from Woody's(I know he'll laugh at me for saying that) or climb up that 9 mile crusher to Tray gap. Head on down the road to the single/double track and rip it on down. Take a left at the paved road to get back to Woody's. Other recommended trails in the same area: Mountain Town Creek/Bear Creek, Windy Gap, Bull Mountain, Man's Hell
