Mostly tight single track, some fireroads, and a small amount of gravel. Two small stretches of the trail are unridable due to washouts or extreme rise in elevation. Lots of wildlife potential and great overlook.
Summary: I rode this trail 4/15/06 and here's my review. The trail needs a lot of maintenance or even just traffic. The trail has great potential if some work is done. I ended up starting the trail from the lower side and ending up at the Hood overlook and it was uphill most of the way which I rather enjoyed. The problem is that the trail is so unused that it gets hard to follow at some points and has so many sticks and blowdown that it can get rather annoying. I made the most of it though as to try and ride over things that normally should be ridden...lol. I hope its just unused because it was early in the season. It could be a great ride if conditions were a little nicer. I biked here mainly because I was climbing at Rocktown and wanted a little bike session to mix things up. Definetly check out Rocktown while you are in the area.

Summary: I do not normally like to be very critical of someone's area or trail, so please do not take any offense. Winter is over, for those of you that use this trail and enjoy trekking to the top of Pidgeon Mountain to ride it, work needs to be done. There are far too many areas where a large tree or grouping of fallen brush interrupts the flow of the this otherwise fantastic trail.
Now, I know that most of the people that come to this area are dropping into Ellison's cave or something of that nature (which I did and enjoyed very much) but there needs to be some maintenance done on this single mountain top trail, to provide a break from the strains of caving. This ride has the potential to be one of the greats in the southeast. That is why I rated it 4 for aerobic and technical but 2 for overall. I realize that it may be a long trip to the top, but after I finally found it I was glad to have ridden it, although I would have loved to take a chainsaw and a shovel to some of the areas.
Section 10.6 is horrible, great downhill completely halted by fallen trees and branches just before reaching the stream bed. That certainly was not the only part that needs work. I will definately be stopping by to try this routea again, I only hope it is cleaner.
I do apologize if I sound like a _____, (you fill in the blank), but I feel strongly about this and if I lived in the area I would do the work, alas I am only a Floridiot.
By the way, the last guys directions were right on. It's not really that hard to find.
Please, someone, clean up this potentially epic trail.
Recommended Route: I entered from the Hood Overlook area.
Other recommended trails in the same area: River Loop and Bear Creek in Ellijay, Chickopee (Elachee)in Gainesville, and Stonewall Falls in Clayton, GA.

Summary: The directions that I got to this trail skipped a couple of roads. From Atlanta take exit 320 off of 75 and take a left towards lafayette. Just stay on 136 all the way into lafayette. When you get into lafayette go staight at the intersection with the BP. Take a left at your second light. Yo will see a dollar store on the right. Take a right at that light. Go straight past the Golden Gallon and continue for about a mile or 2 and you will see a store that I believe is neds old country store or something like that. Take a left on Chamberlain rd. Keep going until you see a sign on the right for the mtn. Take a right on Rocky Lane. Then just go straight up the road. stay straight past the checkpoint, and then stay on the road. You come to one intersection, stay left. I drove my Saturn up this and did alright , but I have to admit I was worried. The riding is okay once you get past the rocky washed up riverbed like trail. Bring plenty of water.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: When looking out across the valley from Hood Overlook, the trailhead is behind you to the left-marked by orange blazes. Be sure to drop your bike and lock it up and take the short hike to Rock Town and finish the approximate 6+mile loop on single track and forest road. Great solitude, abundant wildlife, great views, good workout and some tough uphill rocky sections. 3 miles up and 3 miles down. Not for novices, experts should just add extra loops, great stretch ride for intermediate riders and those like me trying to build skills. Ideally, I'd pitch camp up at Hood Overlook and spend a full weekend camping and riding, with company of course. This area is outstanding and deserves more attention.
Recommended Route: Follow the directions for the Atwood West Brow Loop or Atwood Hood Loop in Alex Nutt's book Mountain Biking Georgia. The directions are valuable when running this area for the first time. His book gives you odometer readings to minimize trail-guessing. I rode the Atwood Hood Loop in the late afternoon on a Wednesday and never saw another person.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: I am writing this review in hopes of drawing attention to it. This may produce discontent from those that applaud its serenity but I am going on the premise that the more attention it gets the more likely it is to stick around. First ride admittedly, but it so exceeding my expectations (when compared to other rides accesible from Birmingham) that I can't wait to get back out there. The ride is an 18 mile loop most of which is singletrack. Didn't have any problems with logging and the trail had few unanticipated stops. Trail is remote but well-marked and offers the rider a chance to explore terrain that otherwise couldn't be found outside of NC. Medium drops, rock gardens, creek crossings, long rolling fast downhills, steep rocky technical downs and progressive ups that offer some difficulty. Trail deserves five stars for its proximity to those of us far removed from anything technical but four is a better indicator of what to expect.
Recommended Route: Don't know the mountain well enough to recommend(relative to other trails found up there) but followed directions listed in Mountain Biking in Alabama.
