Great review. I am going to try this ride out in a couple of weeks. What kind of tires are recommended for this?

Summary:
This trail is an unpaved version of Shark Valley (part of Everglades National Park west of Miami). View is spectacular in a Florida way. Fish, birds, alligators and other mystery things rattling the bushes make the ride enjoyable. Path is fairly smooth and others (fishermen and hikers) sharing the trail are friendly. Flat, flat, flat, nothing to block a fairly constant wind. Entrance padlocked at trailhead requiring lifting bike over or pushing under. Wear sunscreen!

Recommended Route:
Atlantic Blvd. deadends at western most boundry in Coral Springs. Enter the Sawgrass Expressway south on ramp and turn off after about 200 ft for trailhead. Requires turnaround at Commercial Blvd. to exit after ride

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Shark Valley off Tamiami Trail west of Miami, Oleta Miami, Caloosahatchee Regional Park Ft. Myers

Summary:
The levee is a great place to get miles in on your bike without the hassles of riding the road. The road is rocky. There is wildlife all over the place. I have seen deer, thousands of birds, gators, vultures, and other animals. The stretch from the water lock to I-27 is the most scenic. If you want a great place to take a beginner then this is it. However, I recommend driving on the Sawgrasss Expressway and parking next to the water lock and starting from there if you are with beginners. Ride from that point to the fish camp and back. You get in a decent ride and get to see the most wildlife. The entire loop might be too much for a beginner rider, especially in the summer when it is hot. There is NO shade on this ride so be prepared.

Recommended Route:
One way to get to the levee is to goto to Markham Park, which is off of SR84. As you pass over the little bridge at the entrance to the park, look to your left and you will see a dirt road that follows the canal you just passed over. Go into the park and park. Take your bike, ride past the gate to Markham and get onto the dirt road. That road will wind around a corner and you will see the levee, which is no more than an elevated dirt road surrounded by swamp. The loop is a big circle so you can take either road. If you head in a counterclock wise direction, then take note that you must take a left, west, at the ten mile mark or you will be on a longer ride than you expect. Another landmark to use for when to turn is a water lock. You cannot miss the lock. Turn left and keep going until you reach the fish camp at the end of the road. That will be I-27. Take a left on I-27 and ride the street, against traffic, for a couple of miles until you see where the levee picks back up again. Lift your bike over the guard rail and keep riding. The total distance from Markham is roughly 28 miles.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Markham Park next door.
