Rock Spring Run

Average Rating:    (2 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 3

Very sandy pine scrub, pine flatwoods, swamps, and miles of alledged pristine shoreline (difficult to find b/c of trail markings) along Rock Springs Run and the Wekiva River make this reserve a refuge of natural beauty. The website boasts, "Visitors can enjoy bicycling, hiking, or horseback riding along 17 miles of sandy marked trails." Yet it should read "Visitors can enjoy bicycling, hiking, or horseback riding along 17 miles of soft sandy, sparsely marked, and often really wet trails." There was approx 1/4 mile of well packed sand yet this portion of the trail was often times blocked by many low lying or fallen oaks, which required you to dismount and walk. The accompanied pic is of a beautiful equestrian trail.

Summary:
Today I found out they closed the spruce creek cracker creek trails which I was dissapointed about, so I made the drive over to rock springs. I had heard few things about it such as, single track, marked hiking, fire, and bike trails. I can barely describe how much of a waste of time it was. I spent 2 1/2 hrs. fighting through soft to slightly packed but still too soft sugersand, flat very non-interesting terrain. surrounded by archers combing the woods for some dinner.

Recommended Route:
very simple directions, just get on I-4 somehow and get off at the 46 exit in sanford going towards Mt. Dora right before you reach 46A the entrance will be on the left. ( Rock Springs Run reserve)

Summary:
I did not get to ride this Trail b/c when I called to make sure they were still letting people in the park (it sometimes fills up) I found out that I should NOT go b/c it was hunting season. So make sure you call first unless you like the idea of putting your life in danger for the sake of a trail ride.
