Gainesville Trail Network

Average Rating:    (4 of 5)

No. of Reviews: 2

The mountain biking counter-culture in Gville has been hard at work for years building trails. The map for this post shows the west trail head of ONE of them, Alligator Alley. It is typical of local trails. It winds around the end of the UF horse farm and ends at the bottom of SW 16th Ave. There are many, many more miles of trail and multiple weekly rides. The Tour de G'ville is in it's 8th year ('09). It is usually around 60 miles and is always held on the Saturday of the weekend preceeding the Easter weekend (Easter minus 8 days). SE 15th Street one block south of University Ave, 9:30 rollout. For weekly rides to get to know the network, try LBS Mr. Goodbike, every Wednesday, 6:30 pm.

Summary:
The Gainesville Trail network got me into mountain biking. There is a lot to be found in the wodded areas/nature parks around town, behind neighborhoods, on campus, etc.

Recommended Route:
Campus/Raiders - alligator alley - bivens arm - sweetwater? Lobololly - 8th ave - Creekside - whatever it's called behind Cabana Beach? Just hook up with Mr. Goodbike on Wednesdays, Super Cool BIke Shop on Mondays, or Bikes and More on Fridays and find out.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
For a more "official" trail network close by: San Felasco.

Summary:
This trail can be MUDDY, in a short patch. This is one of my favorites in Gainesville. For a flat trail, its quite technical; lots of roots, tight curves, a couple logs, great scenery swampy scenery, and a nice lil' see-saw that catches you (me) off guard. Not a terribly fast trail either. The trail smells like a zoo from all the dead fish (probably caused by gators) and poo (again, probably caused by gators) - its great!

This is one of maybe three 'local' trail I've seen listed online, but there is easily a hundred miles of [mostly] trail riding in Gainesville. Get out and explore!

I rated this trail relative to others in Gainesville.

Powerlines, 20th ave, butler
