South Shore (Fruit) Trail

This is the forum page for the new "South Shore" Trail. This was the Grapefruit trail. There has been alot of activity here latety. There are some fun freeride jumps and a small loop that includes some technical ridge lines that are challenging. Alot of the trail has been there for years, and the new stuff is almost re-creating and adding the fun to a trail that has tons of potential. Thursdays @ 5PM is the group ride and trail work day. We meet @ the St. Josephs church parking lot on Babcock just south of Port Malabar. It''s fun now, and will only get better. Remember how fast Wickham Park changed? You ain''t seen nothin'' yet! We will post trailbuilding and maint. times on this page, so keep an eye out for new postings.
Just past the Melbourne Tillman canal bridge on Babcock St. take a right off the sidewalk and thru the grassy field. About 50 yards on the right there is a small opening in the trees that goes straight down . Watch you speed and no front brake. The trail follows the canal for a few hundred yards and crosses the dried out(sometimes) creek bed. On the other side, the trail continues up the hill and to the newer stunt sections. It continues all the way to where you go under I-95. Best to go with the group the 1st time.
Summary: This trail is awesome, Ive first gotten to it last summer in August, and its been getting better and better. It has an awesome tabletop, some sweet drops, a wooden singletrack bridge and lots of jumps and tight turns. Its not very forgiving, if you wipe, you donate blood quickly. Anyone can get a start on this trail, and it gets you in shape fast and quickly builds your confidence for big Mountainous downhill and freeride. Ive ridden Diablo park in Jersey for quite a few years, and this trail is almost like Diablo laid flat. (Minus the ski lift that takes you up all day). Great, dedicated people constantly make room for big air jumps and the other jumps just seem to get bigger and bigger over time. Its an awesome trail, it seriously gets you in shape very fast. There are always groups out there, and everyone Ive met is really friendly and nice.
Recommended Route: Follow the Trail in the right direction!! Its not fun when you take a jump and have someone coming at you.
Other recommended trails in the same area: None that are close by because its that good!

Summary: I had been to the Fruit Trail before but not since all the wooden features were removed. When I heard about the trail getting torn down I was really disappointed... I give props to the trail builders for coming back after that.
I rode with a buddy this past Sunday and ended up doing about 6 laps. I have to say that I am impressed with the trail. The flow is great, good mix of stunts. It alway suprises me that it has the amount of elevation is has, especially for the area. I think it is actually more fun now than it was before too. The sand wasn't bad and all of the jumps and drops were well built, now all dirt. The wooden stuff is gone.
Recommended Route: Counterclockwise. Ride it while you can though, if it was demo'ed once they could do it again...
Other recommended trails in the same area: Not too much...

Summary: I felt like I needed to review this trail as a NEW mountain biker. It is NOT for novices. And maybe if I had read more reviews I would have come across this info. I am a very new rider. I have ridden Santos once and that's what got me hooked on mountain biking. I did some research and bought a bike. I looked up trails in my area and came upon this one. I thought, being in this very flat area, that I would be in for a nice, relatively easy ride. Big mistake! This is not a trail for beginners as I'm sure you experienced riders know. There are large hills and the trail is along path with quite a drop if you make a mistake (I have the bruises and scrapes to prove it). I can see where it would be a blast for seasoned riders. I am going up to Santos this week and can't wait to try out my new bike there. On the nice, pretty, yellow trails!
Summary: Ahhh, now this is a sweet trail, as good as the Ft. Pierce trails, which I sorely miss. Has many sweet drops, ups & downs with some technical areas, pretty much something for everyone, and you can get some speed on this trail. I have lived here all my life here in Melbourne (40 years for me & my family since the late 1800's) and I have never heard of this trail until yesterday, and rode it for the first time today. Loved it! Saw some of the trail builders hard at work doing a very fine job on one of the steeper drops. Thank you! Will go out tomorrow if the rain permits, got ran out today due to some hard rain sweeping in. This trail by all means blows away Wickham & Malabar Scrub/Turkey Creek by all means. Since Ft. Pierce trails CLOSED, we have been MTB'ing at Wickham & Malabar Scrub/Turkey Creek along with traveling from time to time to Alafia, Balm Boyette, Santos, and Orlando's trails. Gas burning trips but very much worth it for Alafia & Santos. It is really sweet to have our own MTB trails here locally and I would like to thank all the trail workers and everyone else involved in keeping these trails open for us MTB'ers. Thank you and greatly appreciated.
Recommended Route: Just south of Port Malabar Blvd. off of Babcock Rd.. Heading/riding south on the west side sidewalk off Babcock, you will pass Melbourne Tillman Canal, make an immediate right after passing the Canal follow the obvious path/trail a few hundred yards in a field. The trail leads to an opening in the bushes on the right alongside the canal and will drop down, follow this trail back aways into the bushes and it will take you to a network of trails leading all the way to the west side of I-95, which you will pass under. Their are other entrances from the neighbor hoods bordering these trails, but please park either at the shopping Plaza's (east & west side) off of Port Malabar Blvd. & Babcock Rd., or at the Saint Josephs Church, but I recommend the Plaza's unless you have permission to park at the church.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Alafia, Santos, Balm Boyette, Carter, Orlando trails, Deleon Springs (next to the State Park). Local trails - "Ho Chi Minh trail" at Malabar Scrub/Turkey Creek trails, Bum trails, & Wickham Park.

Summary: Forgot to add yesterday: Bunch of us just got back from N.GA. and it was sweet! We stayed @ Mulberry Gap Bunkhouse Inn outside Ellijay, (www.mulberrygap.com )and I highly recommend this place. Great singletrack downhills that you can shuttle to the top and bomb down to the Inn. They provide 2 huge meals a day, and will give you maps and directions. Diane and Ginny will feed you with awesome food and they couldn't be nicer. 2 hot tubs to soak after the ride didn't hurt either. There are tons of trails to ride close by, but the Pinhoti #2 & #3 are worth the drive alone. This was my 1st MTB trip to Ga but NOT the last. Check it out-
