Fern Trail
16 reviews
 3.31 of 5

3.3 miles of urban single track connecting downtown Tallahassee to Tom Brown Park on the East, which is a mtn bike destination itself. This is a green transit trunk trail with many feeder trails. The trail traverses some beautiful remaining in-town forests as it winds its way along RR corridors, future city parks, future K-mart sites, drainage easements and other public and private properties. Hilly terrain on the western half. It crosses several busy roads and goes underneath Capital Circle via the RR tracks. This is well used commute and neighborhood route but is a worthy destination for cyclists seeking single track too. An unofficial trail which was built at night by elves and trolls, the Fern is definitely a unique urban riding experience!

Summary:
This is not really a great destination trail by itself anymore but is good when used as a connector over to Tom Brown Park or just as an addition to those trails. Nothing too hard on it but use caution when it is wet because the bridge without shingles on them are SLICK as are the roots. Recent rain brings out a lichen/algal slime on everything and you can have the wheels slide out from under you if not careful.

Recommended Route:
Starting point on the west at the insection of Inglewood and Redwood. Also can follow the tracks west of Weems Rd. to enter from the east end. Other entry points are the fenced-in retention pond on Park Avenue as well as a couple of the apartment complexes on the north side.

Summary:
It is pretty much gone now, overgrown, and stamped out by new developments. Maybe for someone who rode it frequently before and knows where the trail picks up, when it gets dissected by a roadway, it is still OK. I had fun starting behind Albertsons, and rode all the way out to Park, but then, there I had no idea where the trail picked back up. Maybe if I ride with someone next time who knows the way to Tom Brown, it would be an excellent mile-adder. To sum it up, go with someone who knows the way, and you will have fun, and get to one of the best biking destinations in Tallahassee at Tom Brown Park.

Recommended Route:
Drop in behind Albertsons on Appalachee Pkwy and Blair Stone

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Tom Brown Park

I am the guy who keeps tearing down the little bridge by the fence. It is not needed. If you can't ride over a little hole, stay on the side walk.

Summary:
I'm too lazy right now to review this thoroughly. This is as good as a connector/warm-up trail as I have ever been on. It is alot of fun after some rain as this often sees new trail crossings and slick roots and logs.

Recommended Route:
The neighborhood entrance (back behind Coastal Property Service) that I had been taking for quite a while is no more. Constructin has cut off this entrance and made it quite difficult to get to, that is unless you mind hopping the construction hurricane fencing :)
