Bum Trails

Singletrack trails through an oak/palmetto hammock. The area has alot of small hills for Melbourne. There is also a gully type depression that runs along the tracks just inside the woods. I'm guessing it's where they got fill to build up the tracks back in the day. There are some drops into this gully and some bridges and other fun things to play on along with the trails. Overall a fun ride, but not too long, it's on a limited amount of land. Also, as the name suggests, you may encounter some of the "locals", although I never did.

Trail Directions
From Sarno Rd.- Follow the railroad tracks south past the water reclaimation faciliy, look for the trailhead to break on the right next to a canal. From Westshore Jr/Sr High Area- From US1 or Babcock approach Westshore. Where the road bends next to the school there is a grassy area and a "earth bridge" over the canal, allowing access to the railroad tracks. Park here and follow the tracks north. About .5 miles or before the water reclaimation facility look for the trailhead on your left. If all else fails any LBS can point you in the direction.

Summary:
I just got back for this place an hour ago. The trail loop that I was on can be completed in a few minutes at a fast pace. Allof the other trails i tried to ride down were blocked off by bum tents. The jumps are beat to hell;however, they have a lot of potential of being nice with a little work...I would rather jump my BMX bike on em more so than my mountain bike. I drove an hour to get there to be rather let down once i found them. pretty washed up if you ask me.

Recommended Route:
same as above....park at the gym at the intersection and ride your bike from there. Pass the police station and it will be your next dirt path off on the left side of the road..runs along a canal..follow until the path ends and the trail begins on right

Other recommended trails in the same area:
little big econ forest, santos

Summary:
This trail is about two miles from my house. So after I discovered it on this site I had to check it out. Ever since I make it a point to ride it at least four times a week. The trail is not very wide so there is a lot of shrubbery. Also there are definately some bums. 2/4 times that I ride the trails there are bums with bikes drinking Natural Ice and talking about the good ole days. The jumps are a little beaten up. The wood is warping so when I tried to jump one of them the first time I hit the lip of a warp piece of plywood and went head over heals. There are all kinds of planks going up and down trees. The trail is definately worth checking out but you should be wary of hungry bums! I've bums changing out there and stuff so make sure not to run over a naked bum or a drunk one for that matter.

Recommended Route:
From Apollo rd. just after the police station across the street as a construction site with a canal running along it. Take the path on the other side of the canal to where it goes into a tunnel. This is where the bums hang out and drink beer. If they are not there you can take a tiny path that goes over the tunnel to the trails. If they are there you can take a path that leads to the train tracks and go along the train tracks until you see the trail.

Summary:
Wow, what can I say! This trail is so popular with the locals, some even choose to live there...in tents. The northeast portions are inhabited and the trails smelling ripe, so avoid unless you want your knobbies caked with "mud". The "squatters" don't usually hang around the rest of the trails, so you can safely ride them without fear of attack, e. coli, etc. These trails have world-wide notoriety...pros regularly train here. I won't name-drop, but champions come here and appreciated the rhythm of the twisty singletrack and occasional "log" hop. This trail provides enough of a workout that many a hasher has left here dehydrated and bloody. Bones have been broken and skin left behind. A t-shirt should read "I Survived the Bum Trails" or "I Rode the Bum Trails and All I Got was this Infection"! This trail is a Must ride.
