Ridden Trail: Once a week

Cross Country Rider Summary: When you think of Florida you think of flat & sandy trails that lead to the beach. While we don't have the elevation of many other states this particular trail system is pretty darn fun. Expect lots of sigletrack with technical parts mixed in and (for Florida) some decent elevation that makes for a good work out. The Pensacola Off-Road Cyclists maintain the trails and have been working hard to keep them in good shape. Recommended Route: Main loop is about 9.5 miles. Short loop is 4.5 miles. An additional 4 miles (and growing) on the Hangman Loop across Pate Road. Visit www.porc.org for maps, group rides, and post to the forum for more info from locals about the trails. Other recommended trails in the same area: Oak Mountain by Birmingham, Alabama & Swayback by Montgomery, Alabama.

Cross Country Rider Summary: just thought I'd update: These trails are still excellent for what we have to work with. They do change over time or hurricanes but PORC works hard to keep them up and fun. They are about 90% singletrack always climbing or descending and if you go fast you have very little rest time. If you don't think they are fun or challanging your not going fast enough. Recommended Route: maps at PORC.org. the bridge from the university side is no more so best bet is parking at the pate road trail head. There are trail blazes to show the regular long (8-9) mile loop and the short (4.5-5) mile loop. there are more so explore.

Weekend Warrior Summary: This is the best system of trails I've seen in Florida. Being in Florida, there is sand, but it's not bad. It's just bad at the bottom of the small power lines. As far as "dead end trails," the only ones I've seen are where deer make trails to the water. It has taken me about two months to get comfortable with directions, but I prefer exploring to some McDisney tour-guided tramp through defined trails. You'll have a hard time getting around if you go without maps. The power lines pretty much look the same and are poor landmarks, and the trails loop around enough to confuse you. If you're of the Lewis & Clark mentality, learning the area for yourself is gratifying.
If the trails are too easy, there are some sever slopes in the north side crossing the "Valley." I'd guess 8-10 feet and almost vertical in spots. There are places for all skill levels, though. I've been out with my roommate's 10 year-old daughter, and I've been nearly killed trying to keep up with much faster riders. It's always been fun, though.
Get maps or go with someone that knows the trails. They loop around and you can easily lose your sense of direction, especially if it's overcast. PORC.org has maps to print out and UWF also has maps in the gym. I haven't seen maps in the box at the entrance to Wantz's Way. Recommended Route: I like to go through the western part of the area. Go west from the water tower and down the hill. Turn left at the mossy rock and down the hill, over the bridge. Up the power line past Chute to the Gorge. Then at the end of Gorge go up the big power line to Cambodia. From Cambodia you hit Carl's trail, Pate, Treehugger, and Greenbrier all in a row. From there you go straight across the big power line and down the Chute, it's exciting! That brings you out at the bridge and back up to the water tower. That's ten or twelve miles and it doesn't even cover Wantz's way and the other trails on the north side of the area, there are also miles more trails in the "Trials" are on the other side of the campus. Other recommended trails in the same area: Everything else around here pales.

Cross Country Rider Summary: OK, I'm from Colorado, we don't have any beaches like Pensacola. So, I didn't expect Pensacola to have Mtn like Colorado. Therefore this trail rocks! I just love riding and this was incredible considering the location. Fun, fast, twisty, singletrack and some quick climbs made more difficult by the sand. I found some jumps and North shore type creations on Hangman. The whole experience was super. All those people from other places need to remember where they are and appreciate the fact that there are trail like this in the Fl panhandle. PORC does a outstanding job keeping the trails up. Thanks! I gave it high marks because of it's location. Recommended Route: I rode for 3 hours and found most of the trails. Get a map off the PORC website.
