Middle Run

Middle Run Park runs from Pike Creek to the outskirts of Newark. Traveling down Paper Mill Rd (rt 72) toward Newark between Polly Drummond and Possum Park roads the entire left side has tons of great single track.
Turn onto Possum Park Rd from Paper Mill Rd and make a left into the park on a small hard to find dirt road. There is a small sign but it is very hard. There is a trail map in the parking lot. You can also park off Polly Drummond Rd at McGlynn's Bar and ride down Foxden Rd. The trail head to the left takes you into the heart of the trail system. This seems to be far more popular since you can get a good drink afterwards. :)
Summary: This trail is great if your just starting out, you need a recovery trail or even just need to change up which trails your riding. No real big climbs, or nasty descents but the trail spinners (the group that maintains the trails) do an awesome job at maintenance and cutting new trails, this is because its actually done by people who mountain bike and know what mountain bikers like to ride, awesome job guys.
Recommended Route: Get lost and find your way out, if its your first time. If its too small go across the street to white clay and create a bigger loop.
Other recommended trails in the same area: brandywine

Summary: Well i see it has been a while since this trail has been reviewed. It has been completely revamped on many sections, especially around the water tower. Someone, (i think the trail spinners) worked very hard to transform parts of the park that was showing it's age. What we have now is simply put, FUN!!! Lots of woops, drops, and smooth running trails begging to be taken fast. Of course the people who worked on it used their considerable experience to make this both challanging to the more experienced rider, but still safe for you to take a new rider to enjoy.
Recommended Route: Just go and play, you will be impressed with all the new work done there.

Summary: Middle Ring\Run is a fast wooded, mostly single track park that’s fun and can be challenging. This system is mostly hard pack with some technical areas that can develop skills for a more difficult ride elsewhere. You’re going to love this system if you’re a pro or a first time rider. If you’re looking to build up some tank, then all you have to do is keep it moving!! If you can ride it out, then you win, if not just Pump Your Breaks!!
Recommended Route: Normally we ride the Judge Morris trails to get a quick 4-5 mile warm up and simply cross the street (Polly Drummond Hill Road) into the corn fields and into the system.
95 South to Kirkwood Highway W to a Right turn on Polly Drummond, Judge Morris is on your right about a mile up the road.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Brandywine is a nice system. Park at the Courtyard off 202. On the side of the hotel is a trail head.

Summary: This is the go-to spot in the Newark area. It can be confusing for a newbie because the trails aren't well-marked and there are many twists, turns, and junctions, but once you get the hang of it, it's a blast. Plenty of fast singletrack, technical sections, and solid climbs. The sections are rather short, but they can be looped together for as long/tough of a ride as you want.
Recommended Route: I start at the Judge Morris parking lot and cross the street to the trail through the cornfield and then it's a fast downhill to the stream. From there, it's whatever you feel like doing. Go with someone who knows the trails the first few times so you can learn the different routes. There's a connector to White Clay and the skills trail, so definitely check that out.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Fair Hill (MD), White Clay

Summary: If it's your first time, either go with someone else who knows the trails or give yourself plenty of time to get lost. The people who put up trail marker signs use the "all or nothing" approach (also used extensively by PennDOT). Especially when you start out, trail junctions are well marked, but later it seems they got bored and sort of said "the hell with it." If you're lucky at the next trail junction you'll find out if you went the right way or not. I guess after riding here a few times you get familiar with the junctions and it's not as big a deal. Just a heads up: there's a part of the Double Horseshoe trail that runs through a field. They recently mowed the grass and the trail just disappeared--couldn't find it. Fortunately up over a hill I spotted a trail sign denoting the entrance back into the woods. Check the Delaware State Parks website for White Clay Creek. There you can find a downloadable map with both WC and Middle Run trails that might be helpful.
Anyway, the trails are lots of fun. Being fat and out of shape, some uphills were too steep for me. Even a few downhills were so steep that I could see a hospital visit looming. But certainly enough variety, especially coupled with White Clay Creek Park, to keep from getting bored.
Recommended Route: I came from Delaware County, PA. Down 95 to Exit 3 (Route 273) toward Newark. Take that to Route 2 and 72. Make right. Take for maybe a mile, then follow route 72 left onto Possum Park Rd. Look for sign for Middle Run and turn right onto Possum Hollow Rd. (Must be lots of possums around). Take that road down past Korean Church and make left into Middle Run. (If you reach the Tri-State Bird Refuge you missed the turn) Follow dirt road to parking area. Parking is free. There is a map, but there's no way you can memorize it the first time. Good luck!
