Stony Creek Quarry

Average Rating:    (3.33 of 5)

Great terrain with mix of single and double track, but unfortunately poorly maintained and overgrown. Some rocky technical areas, moderate hills, some unridable areas. Very little bike traffic any more.

Summary:
Rode there the other night. I lost my Night Rider light just after dark. Went to turn it on and it was gone. I was with a friend who lent me a cheap Petzel headlamp. I really couldn't see but the trails felt pretty good! Technical stuff in the dark isn't scary because you can't see it.

Summary:
This trail rivals West Woods with it's different terrain. It is kind of easy to get lost, study the maps at the beginning of the trail. (Parking at lot at intersection of RR Trestle and Leetes Island Rd.) Trails come out near the Stony Creek Quarry also. One day we were able to ride across some smooth rock cliff tops as the sun was starting to get low in the west, we were just able to make it out to the parking before dark.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
West Woods, Branford Supply Pond

Summary:
OK, I've actually been here twice; I went today, and the time before was many years ago. I was disappointed to see that the trails have not been well maintained since I was there last. It is a great network of trails with some great technical riding, rocky sections, and technical sections you can haul down, but most trails are overgrown to obscurity, some with many downed trees blocking the trail (no, I don't mean log-hops). I would love to see this area get cleaned up and used - it has great potential, and it's linked to Westwoods.

Recommended Route:
Stick to the main trails that look clear. Follow the trailhead in until you reach an open wooded area with large boulders on the left. Trail continues straight or up the hill to the left. Follow the trail up the hill on the left. Fun trail, in generally good ridable condition. AVOID the Orange/Green trail that winds through the northeastern part of the trail system. Would make a great hike, but not while carring your bike...
