Summary:
Section 1 (easy to intermediate):
Starting at the dam, head up the resevoir road (you can get to the damn either from the Chamberlain highway on the Berlin side or from Hubbard park on the Meriden side). Just as the road takes a sharp up-hill left, look for a yellow barrier-gate on the right. Immediately to the left of that gate is a small trail-head into the woods. Take that trail and head to the left. Within 50 yards, you will come to a stream (most of the time it is dry). Keeping to the right, cross the stream onto a narrow path that serves as the right-hand bank of the stream. Follow this dike-like path (the Stream will be on your left the whole way) until you come to a hill. Go up the hill and follow the path to the grassy gas-line meadow. Head right on the meadow path and go down the long hill (don't go across the meadow into the woods - you will come out that side on your way back at the end of Section 4 and the beginning of Section 5). Keep going straight down the hill (don't take the tempting right-hand turn toward the bottom) until you come to a small up-hill where you turn left (if you miss this, which you can't, you end up on a paved road). The trail heads back into the woods at this point, down a small hill. As it flattens out, head toward the left, which starts a gradual up hill climb. There is a stream cross here and after a few hundred yards, you will see a trail merge in from the left. Don't take that trail - stay to the right. Follow this section of the trail for about 3/4 of mile until you come to the power lines. With the exception of a few small hills, this section is flat and fun to cruse through. Section 2 (intermediate to difficult):
Cross under the power lines. The trail goes down to the left then winds back to the right where it enters the woods again where you begin a series of up-hill 'switches-back' that eventually bring you back out under the power lines higher up the hill on the west ridge. This is not a very long section. The are one or two trails that turn off this one - stay on the 'correct' trail by going up - if you go down hill for any length of time you have taken the wrong trail. There is a very nice view overlooking Southington Mountain and Southington Valley underneath the power lines. Stop here for sustenance as the next section get harder. Section 3 (just plain difficult):
Cross under the power lines, back into the woods (you should be heading 'south-ish' at this point). Head up and up and up for what seems like forever. Much of this is very rocky and unless you are a very skilled rider, you will probably end up doing a bit of hike-a-bike but not for any long distance. Eventually you will come out to the grassy gas-line meadow (same one as is Section 1 except now you are way up on top of the hill). Don't go down the gas-line meadow trail but rather go across the meadow, back into the woods and up the trail for about 100 yards. Section 4 (difficult but very fun section of loop):
After crossing the gas-line meadow and riding up into the woods look for a small trail the branches off to the left. It is blue blazed but not easy to see. This trail is not more that 150 yards past the gas line meadow. The beginning of this trail has several fallen trees to cross then it settles into a great single track that ends in a pine grove that opens back out onto gas-line meadow. As I mentioned in my previous review, SLOW DOWN as you go through the pine grove because the trail end VERY abruptly in about a 20 foot drop off. Make your way down the drop-off (you choose how to do this based on your skill level), cross the gas-line meadow, back into the woods and follow the narrow (sometimes VERY narrow between trees) single track until you get to the (usually) dry run-off stream-bed. After crossing the rocky run-off stream-bed, the trail abruptly turns off to the right after about 20 feet - don't follow the stream-bed even though it looks like a trail. This is hike-a-bike territory again but it doesn't last long. The section of the trail I just described switches back a few times then crosses a stream (usually running). After crossing over the stream go up until you pop out on to a wider trail where you will turn right and go up hill for a few hundred yards until you come out to the gas-line meadow again (for the last time). Section 5 (easy):
Cross the meadow into the woods, heading slightly right (up hill but don't head directly up the gas-line trail). You are now back on the trail described in Section 1, heading in the opposite direction). This is the dike-like trail with the stream now on your right. This pops right out onto the reservoir road where you will turn left to go back to the dam.

Recommended Route:
Just thought I would post a new loop. It incorporates some of the trails I described in my previous review on Sep 10, 2002, and is similar to the one that 'Craig' posted below on Jan 18, 2001. I've described this loop in several sections with a 'degree-of-difficulty' rating from a 'close-to-40' year old intermediate level rider's perspective. This loop is about 10-12 miles in length:

Summary:
I live very close to this area and ride out my driveway. I do this loop (road to and from park included) in 2 to 2.5 hours depending on which route I take to the Radio Towers. There is a lot of terrain here. Yes much of it is rocky but still log of fun and I'm riding a rigid bike. I'm an intermediate level rider riding an entry level bike. I think this loop is challanging and I'm amazed my bike holds up to the rocky abuse it get on these trails. We need more reviews of the East Ridge - I'm less farmiliar with this area but I've done some trails on this side. I'm looking for the ride that takes you up along the ridge where you can look down and see the Mall and the new Target store. I happened upon this a few years back but evey time I try to find this trail again, I end up somewhere else. Can somone post direction from the Damn?

Recommended Route:
Read some of the other review on this area for various ways to get to the Blue Blaze trail at the Radio Towers. Head north down the Blue trail. At the vary top maybe 100 yards in, go left toward the cliffs. This is a short narrow single that pops you right back onto the main trail (this is not well ridden so you have of kinda make up the end yourself). Keep going down, down, down. About 200 yards before the Gas Line meadow, look for a small single (Blue Blazed) off to the right. You will know you took the correct turn off because the first few yards have many fallen trees to cross. This is a new, very narrow trail that winds through some cool stuff - not nearly as rocky as the main trail. As you hit the pine grove, you are coming to the end (way too soon) SLOW DOWN unless you are into 20 foot hucks. At this point you're back on the Gas pipeline meadow. You can either go right down the Pipe Line (some hairy, steep, loose rocky crap) where you will cross a stream, and go back up a small hill and take a sharpe right that will bring you back to the bottom of the Castle road. Or Cross the Gas line meadow directly as you exit the woods and follow the single track further. This has some nasty switchbacks and stream cross. This trail will intersect a wider trail a bit past the stream. At the intersection go right, up the hill back to the Gas line meadow. Cross the Gas line and follow that back to the bottom of the Castle rd.

Summary:
recomend going to the top and taking the fire roads down, if you follow them allthe way, youll end up in a guys backyard, cut through, take a left then a right the a left follow the road till the end take a right then a left and you will be back on berlin street About 20 miles, rocky bumpy and very fun

Recommended Route:
we start in Soughtington High School Parking lot, head past the foot ball field,past another school(depollo Middle school)keep going, till you intersect Berin street, turn left go tillthe end turn right folllow this road till yoyu get to camp sloper, in the camp look for the power line(overhead) folow the little trail, take the second right( if you endup where u just where take the next right) will turn into pavement, follow till end, then there is a house with a ditch(sorta) follow untill you hit the trail, you can follow the trail all thourgh Hubbard park,

Summary:
Some moderately rocky terrain (loose though) with long climbs and desents. Awesome views from castle craig. Can be a gruelling workout. Ride the pavement for a workout in the winter without worrying about traffic..

Recommended Route:
across the highway on pedestrian bridge, up hill, bear right, follow to pavement take left, follow past reservoir, up hill take first right into woods, bear right, left at first fork, left once you hit the blue
trail on the ridge - long rocky climb, to radio tower, left dn road, quick left into woods for sweet downhill,
road back home see bikerag.com for topo map

Summary:
lots of uphill...great for a workout...not reccommended to beginners esp after a rain...mud mud and more mud....try in winter with ice and snow on the trail...thats a blast...very rocky....be sure to bring a spare...ive lost 2 wheels...be sure to stop at the halfway house and destroy some of meridens culture...whoops did i say that?

Recommended Route:
head up the trail...cross 691...go up...eventually youll get to a gradual climb...look to your right and take the bike up that...small but fun loop that leads back to the trail...when on main trail hang left at big rock....go up and take a break at meridens landmark...after your set to go...take same way down but hang left at big rock....incredible downhill run....eventually end up at resivoir...take road up to radio towers...trail on right hand side...technical but fast...very downhill....emd up at road....you can find metacomet trail from the 4 way intersection at the end of the water...awesome ride that leads you to over look the huge mall
