Burr Pond
5 reviews
4.4 of 5
The Burr Pond loop is short but sweet. It is roughly 3-4 miles of blue trail that parallels the shore of the pond. It has a short climb with a couple of brief but technical rocky downhills. It also offers some root sections that are especially tricky when wet, and some all around fun singletrack. The loop is best ridden in a counter clockwise fashion (be aware of hikers and others). The goal is to try and beat your time or "dab" less with each consecutive lap. Another great aspect is that you are never that far away from your car (good thing for repairs/injuries). In general, Burr Pond is a fun place to ride.
From the southern part of the state follow Rte. 8 north past Torrington towards Winsted. Get of on exit 46, the Burrville exit. You should see signs for Burr Pond in front of you. At the end of the exit ramp you should take a left. Follow that road (or signs) to the next major intersection and take a left (roughly 3/4 mile). Go down that road for a few miles and look for a sign for Burr Pond. Take that right and follow the road up to the entrance of the park. The best place to park is at the second lot on the left (boat launching area). The trailhead is located on either side of the parking lot.
Summary: The trail is good fun with some excellent terrain. The easiest line is fairly easily seen with the amount of traffic here. Stay clear of the place on Sundays if you are planning to ride with your dogs - it's W.T. day to walk their attack dogs. Overall an excellent ride - great place for a beginner to learn or an intermediate to crank laps (+/- 30 minutes). As stated before ride counter clockwise because the whole thing seems to be downhill.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: Route around pond is short and quick so you may want to ride it both directions. There are a couple of tricky rock sections, a log or two, but on the whole fairly easy. Going counterclockwise you should be able to ride all the way around without putting a foot down (however I usually mess up once or twice). Clockwise has a couple of steep uphills that may require hike-a-bike for a short distance.
Recommended Route: I start at entrance before large parking lot. Ride from there up to small wooden bridge. From there you can either ride to right up to main entrance and counter clockwise around pond or cross bridge and ride clockwise around pond.

Ridden Trail: Once a month

Summary: The trail is very well kept (this being a state park) and it is also mtn. biker friendly (seemingly). Basically, just park and ride, there are a few rock sections that are fun to try to get through, some root sections that are fairly challenging, and depending on which way around the pond you are riding, there is a nice little rocky uphill climb which turns into a kind of fir road before the trail dips back down into the woods towards the pond. Honestly, I just went up there to check this place out, and it was a lot of fun, and I will be definitly be going back. Just watch out for children and hikers on the trail, as well as other riders. Other than that, its an all around fun place to ride at.
Recommended Route: Park in either the boat launch lot, or in the main lot, it really dosent matter, either lot is fine. The blue marked trail heads are easy to spot. It is a lot of fun riding this loop, all around decent singletrack, not too hard and not too easy, just right.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Go down to Middletown and ride the Middlesex trails behind MxCTC, best singletrack in the state.

Summary: Great all around track, I agree that it may take a few laps to really feel spent. Good technical (roots, rocks, logs...)as well as a really nice area to bike around. Only thing to watch out for is walkers with dogs, other then that it's a blast.
Recommended Route: Clock wise if your looking for some real technical hard core rock climbing, counter for more of a speed run down the rock section.

Summary: really nice (but short), technical downhills without tough climbs. Lots of rocks!
Recommended Route: go to the parking lot and follow the edge of the lake to the right. take every left turn from there on out. you probably want to do multiple laps.
