Brooksvale Park

Do you like climbing? The first half of the ride is almost all uphill- but you have some great descents on the way back. Some short, steep technical climbs, some long thigh grinders. Very rocky area, lots of baby skulls. When you find your way to the YMCA camp, you can go right and head back to parking area, or take a left to four-way intersection, take a left here, go right around a curve and right again where the road forks. In about a mile, on your right will be some power lines. A very long climb takes you to a blue trail on your right, which will point you back to the YMCA camp. A map and compass (or a rider familiar with the area) will help here.

Summary:
Brooksvale is open and ready to ride, not sure why I keep hearing its closed. I've gone couple times in the past month and had a blast, only problem is I feel its wayyy to easy to get lost. The few trails Ive been on though have been pretttyy sweet. Its got a good variety of trails from the wide main trails to the technical single track trails.

Recommended Route:
Park by the baseball field and head up towards the main trail where the sign/map is. Start out going straight on the red trail shortly after getting on the trail you'll come to a fork where you can go left or right head right. This part is a good uphill thigh grinder worth the work though when you get to bomb back down it to finish your trip. After you reach the top you'll come to an intersection of trails. You gain go left, straight or right keep heading right. This part goes for maybe 1/4 mile cool little jumps and a 15 ft plank bridge that goes over a dried up rocky stream fun to bomb across. Once your over this you'll come to a short climb again at the top on the corner of trail it splits off take the first small single track trail on your right. This is a sick technical trail for those looking to test their skills and get some air. Its about 1/4 mile long you'll come out by another intersection and you can double back or take a left to head back in the same direction. All this takes about an hour. Keep on keeping onnnnn

Other recommended trails in the same area:
West Rock is a decent place to explore, finding the good trails takes some time and usually the reward is minimal if your looking for some technical stuff. Worth going just for the great view from the top

Summary:
Motorbikes and quads have ripped up the trails in the Naugatuck State Forest. To make a bad morning worse, some traiil improvement work earned me a citation and fine from a forest ranger that creeped up to me. He said the forest is closed to bikes and trail work. I only saw one sign to that effect on my way out. The dude was a pain. He said Brooksvale Park is closed to biking too.

Recommended Route:
Try Larkin Bridle trail. This isn't worth the trouble.

Summary:
Since this trail is on my way home from work I use it for strength training. My goal is to make it all the way up to the gas lines in Naugatuck State Forest without stopping. Right now I take a short loop up and to the left, taking the connector over to the power lines and then blast on back down to the Hamden/Cheshire linear trail. It's a great view of the lower Cheshire Valley when you come out on the power lines.

Recommended Route:
See above

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Naugatuck State Forest (start behind the YMCA Outdoor Center) off Gaylord Mtn Road in Hamden.

Summary:
Brooksvale has some good trails, the begining is mostly uphill and bringing a heavy bike would be stupid. It has a good DJ travel and many new trails are being added. Too bad the North Shore was takin down or is now unrideable. It's kinda hard too get lost, but awhile ago I took a wrong turn and ended up far away from Brooksvale, I wouldn't recommend going past 4:00ish considering u'll spend a good 2-3 hours in there.

Recommended Route:
Anything
