Pachaug State Forest
5 reviews
4.2 of 5
Pachaug is the largest state forest in the world.. OK in CT.. I have been here twice now and would agree with the rave reviews on the
street.. In this area you have so many networks of trails - pachaug - nehantic - narragansett, plus many unmarked trails and fire roads.. The trails also link up
with Arcadia if your really crafty.. The trails are somewhat hard to follow, hopefully bikerag can work on that with a good topo map.. The trails vary from
rocky singletrack, rocky double track, really rocky double track, smooth single track through pine forests, even some good slick rock riding (short sections)..
Not too much vertical, but very technical - I wasnt bored with too many sections and very little hike a bike SO FAR!! Mount misery is a must!! Nice views
and wicked cool technical rocks - try it both ways!!
Go to Bikerag.com for trail map
Summary: Tons of trails, fireroads and singletrack mostly. Lots of hills and climbs on the fire roads. The side trails are very rocky and technical, plan to be sore if riding a rigin or hardtail.
Recommended Route: Follow signs up to mt.misery
Other recommended trails in the same area: arcadia, other blue trails

Summary: There is more here than most maps show. Bikerag has the best map. Most trails are closed to dirt bikes but ALL are open to mountain bikes. Watch for horse riders that camp there. The trails and dirt roads are full of them sometimes. Some of the washed out sections can be hard on you and your bike but most of the trails are loads of fun. Strongly recommend a full suspension ride if you plan on rolling all the trails here. I've even taken my wife and daughters on some nice rides here so not all the trails are meant for hardcores. Nice camping across the street at Natures campsites also.
Recommended Route: Enter park off Rt. 49 and take your first trail on the right. (1/4 mi. in)Follow your map from Bikerag and choose the lenght of the loop you feel like.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hartmans, Grayville, Burlington

Summary: The sign at the ranger station stating to stay off the blue trails means STAY OFF THE BLUE TRAILS. Don't be ignorant.
Recommended Route: NOT on the blue trails.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Non-blue trails.

Summary: This trail network (Pachaug, Nehantic, Phillips Pond, and the offshoots) are very, very cool if you like adventure. NEMBA has established loops that are well documented and fairly easy to follow (email me). I am also working on mapping a route from the Midstate trail (Mass.) to the North/South trail, cutting West into Pachaug, back East to Dexter Gordon into Arcadia, and South into Charleston, RI, using a GPS and Topo software. Mt. Misery truly rocks -- if you ride from the South side and use the North ridge as the downhill you can just barely clean the whole thing. Very hairy! The blue blazes help but your best bet is to take a compass -- EMS has great little ones you can strap to your handlebar. A roadmap will help if you get lost (you'll cross a few roads); there are also trailmaps at the ranger station in the Pachaug State Forest Ranger Station, right next to the sign that says not to ride the blue blaze trails. BS. There are enough easy sections to entice a novice, but unless you're only satisfied by pure trials or knarly DH you will find plenty to challenge and amuse you. You can easily do an all day epic if you wind your way down to Dexter Gordon Park and Arcadia from Plainfield. Email me if you'd like to ride, I can scan and email maps also.
Recommended Route: Here's a good one: Start at the Plainfield Management Area (Exit 88 off 395, head East, immediate left at Wendy's, follow road to end, left at Stop sign and immediate right all the way to end. Park in the gravel lot and take the trails at the southeast corner if it's wet, southwest corner if dry.) Go generally South to Mt. Misery, go over the top, and double-back (this is an out-and-back that will never bore you). You will see lots of hungry hawks and owls waiting for you to drop so they can feed on your carcass. Follow the Pachaug or Nehantic trails as an out-and-back until you get a feel for the place. Later, head further south to Dexter Gordon then head East to Arcadia and loop back via the North/South trail to 14. Epic!
Other recommended trails in the same area: Arcadia, Dexter Gordon, or North/South to Midstate for the hardcore Cross-Country epic.
