3.75 one-way climb from trailhead on Red Sandstone Road (RSD). Red Sandstone goes North from the North Vail Frontage Rd located approximately 1/2 mile West of Main Vail Intersection with I-70.

880 vertical climb 1 way - with ~350 verical loss. Total climb for out and back is ~1200. Nice pseudo technical descent on return trip. Great practice at high altitude for young & old.

Proceed North on Red Sandstone Road for approximately 7-8 miles. Proceed up Red Sandstone Road (unimproved gravel Forest Service Road). Drive into the backcountry and stop at the first major trail head at approx 7-8 miles from the North Frontage Road. You can ride this section from the Town of Vail, but be prepared to be dusted by Vehicle Traffic.

From trailhead, climb single track to NNE. Climbing is gradual and doable for Advanced Intermediates to Expert Riders. You will notice lots of pine beetle kill to the Lodgepole Pine old growth forest. The trail is rocky and rooty in spots with some moderately challenging climbs.

At approximately <3 miles you will encounter a sever drop down a rocky hillside. Keep on the main trail and do you best to keep on your bike. You will traverse a new growth forest for several hundred yards and re-enter a dying Old Growth forest for the final jaunt to Lost Lake.

This is a beautiful Out and Back run with great views of vista's to Vail and Mt of the Holy Cross. Additionally you will witness pristine single track in a healing forrest.

Ethereal. . . . . . . . .

Lost Lake is a great trail. Starts at about 9,500 and end up at 10,200 or so. This trail is a gradual climb that has some tough sections. Just before 3 miles you will encounter a big descent that is rocky and maybe a hike a bike. After this descent you will be at Lost Lake.

Go back down is sweet. Lots of good singletrack downhill that's fun to ride.

Recommended Route:
From the trailhead on Red Sandstone Road simply go up the trail. Stop at the lake and come back down. Pretty simple really - Out & Back!
