Prospect Trail / Loop

New Trail as of Fall 2007! Pick up a map at local bike stores... Start at the top of the Gondola and ride towards the nature center, which is on the left. Look for Village Trail head on the right. Take the Village Trail about 1/4 mile and Prospect Trail forks off to the left. Begin a 4+ mile climb with a few nice descents in there for you to enjoy. After you go under the poma lift (around 4.25 miles in) you come out to a road. Go slight left and continue on Prospect Trail. This trail crosses a dirt road twice and dumps you out onto another one at the end. At this point you will have the option to go into Alta Lakes for a mini epic or take a right and continue on the Prospect Trail which brings you back towards Mountain Village. Keep a keen eye out for the single track trail to the right when you are on the short section of double track. The single track ends and you are on the ski area and must bushwhack down the ski runs or take the dirt roads toward the base. Super fun single track on this new trail. Great views and keeps you on your toes just enough. This is a high altitude ride starting at 10,500 and strong riders should expect 1 - 1.5 hrs to complete. I'll try to add a photo soon.

Summary:
Prospect trail starts at the top of the gondola and head across the ski mountain under lift 4 then five into prospect basin. Most of the trail is rolling with only a few short steep climbs. Trail eventually leads to the mountain village(kinda disapears on the ski slopes). Prospect trail is also the gateway to alta lakes trail system. When combined with alta lakes to sunshine trail(t35) to galloping goose to vally floor singletrack I dare anyone to find a better ride(90 percent singletrack) Prospect trail(with prospect loop) is around 2 hours back to town. With alta lakes around 3-4hours.

Recommended Route:
Follow the signs. Make sure to do prospect loop adds 20 mins but worth it. Again alta lakes is the gem of Telluride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Eider creek, mill creek, wilson mesa, East fork and many others
